What happened to my keypad??

Since I need a car pc for only mp3's, I've been using Dos and Mpxplay. I have a numeric keypad that is a ps2 with an AT-style adapter. It has worked perfectly for 2 months. But this weekend, I found a better case to put the motherboard in. I put the motherboard in the "new" case and now my keypad won't automatically detect. I have to unplug it then plug it in again to work. :confused:

I tried another motherboard and it's the same thing. Regular keyboards work fine. It doesn't give an error (I have all errors turned off.) Strange part, the keypad works correctly every now and then. But most of the time I have to unplug it.

How can it go from working perfectly to now needing to be unplugged? What did I do wrong? I did a SEARCH but found no answer to the problem. Please help me.

Hey I'm no expert but the only thing I can think of is your adapter coincidently broke down at the same time (I think you're still using it?)...

That's the only thing I can think of but maybe someone else has more experience...

ps2 ports are not hot swapable. i dont know if this is the problem exactly, because you are using the adapter, and i have never had a problem with the few times unplugged/plugged in ps2 keyboards. although the warnings aways say never to plug/unplug ps2 devices with the computer powered on.

So are these the two possibilities:

1. I've tripped something in the keypad itself? Since it now does the same thing (has to be unplugged) on more than one computer. Even if it is plugged in before the computer is turned on.

2. The adapter go messed up somehow?

What's my best choice to make? Get another adapter or get another keypad? I'm tempted to get a keypad since the cost of the adapters is higher than I thought they would be. Any thoughts?

Anyone know how to trick pc into thinking keypad is a full size keyboard, since a full-size keyboard works?

FYI, I just tried it on another computer and it works. What am I missing?

I think that you could get a Y adaptor and out a fullsize keyboard in one of the ends, and your keypad in the other, depending on your install..

Plugging two ps2 keyboards or two ps2 mice into the same port with a y splitter wont work, as they both run at the same freq. The Y splitters are for plugging a mouse and a keyboard into a laptop ps2 port which can accomodate the two different timings on one port (but still not two devices with the same timings). as was said, ps/2 is not hotswap, and not so much anymore, but in years gone by, you could easily kill a ps2 port by plugging a device in with the machine on. If its doing it on multiple machines, it would seem that putting the computer in a new case is simply a coincidence. Otherwise, it sounds as if somthing is shorting (grouding out) oddly.

Thanks for the input. After testing things I believe that somehow I just tripped something in the keypad. Whatever was working fine before is just messed up now. If I turn on the pc with the keypad plugged in, it just beeps until I unplug the keypad and plug it back in again. Then it works fine. So I may just get another keypad.

I guess it was my fault for wanting a nicer case. I had it working perfectly before I changed cases. Well, I'll look at it in a positive way. Sooner or later I'll get this fixed. Then I'll have it working perfectly AND I'll have the nicer case. :D (Only this time I'll leave things alone.)

$10us for a numeric keypad and snake light thingie. i think theyre both USB, so itll save you room for your PS/2 ports. if you dont have a USB port you can buy a USB>PS/2 adapter somewhere

im curious, how would i be able to control winamp with one of these? i plan on buying one but it isnt programmable and i dont see anywhere to change the keyboard commands in winamp.
