i dont see why it wouldn't work, but it would suck when you get some random wrong number calling, also if the phone rang/vibrated more than once, the starter would grind, or if it didn't ring/vibe long enough, it just wouldn't start.

i was considering doing this with a cheap prepaid type phone, but never ended up following through on it.

if you wanted to get really fancy you could do the prepaid phone, then get some gadget that only fires when it hears a specific tone. so you call into the phone, dial a couple numbers, and boom your car starts. this would also eliminate random calls and the rmultiple ring problem.....

now that would be cool. not sure if its possible though (well im sure its possible but how much $$$ are you willing to spend?

Or you can just get a regular remote start with a satellite link (Audiovox CarLink is what I have) and then you dial a 1-800 number, enter your pin, and from there start, unlock, lock, pop the trunk whatever from anywhere in the world for free. Also can shut down the car remotely ehile in motion (Think car theft). Unit is like $100 flat out new, no monthly charges for life.

ya i was thinking about the mulitple rings.....maybe a latching relay setup so that once it gets the 12v it just stays on. Woul have to put some sort of signal off of an accesory(sp?) so that it can unlatch when the motor is running. maybe off the tach. seemed like good plan but it still needs a little fine tuning.

Depending on the capabilities of the cell phone you plan on installing in the car, you could set the phone to not ring and not vibrate unless a call is received from a given contact/group of contacts. Then, assign whichever ring tone/ring once/vibrate necessary to get the pulse you want to only the numbers that are acceptable for car starting purpose (i.e., your home phone, cell phone, etc.).

By using a single ring option, you might be able to avoid the grinding from multi-rings, and hopefully the 'approved only' contacts approach would prevent wrong numbers from starting your car unexpectedly.
