Integrated LAN adapter (LAN Down)
Recent Intel chipsets integrate the Media Access Control (MAC) portion (MAC) of the LAN adapter into the I/O Controller Hub (ICH) of the chipset. The Physical (PHY) portion of the LAN adapter is not integrated, so a separate LAN chip must still be used on the motherboard to support LAN functionality. Additionally, some motherboards use a PCI LAN adapter chip that does not use the integrated MAC portion of the ICH.
