    Slim CD port to IDE port adapter1 {SOLVED}

    I am going on my second one of these drives and now its garbage too!!!!!! Here is a link to the item. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-QUANTA-STORA...QQcmdZViewItem. The first one I bought made weird noises and when you ejected the DVD, the whole metal framing of DVD Rom would flex up, and the dvd would not come back out all the way with out jamming something in there to pull it out. So I emailed the seller and he sent a new one. Well this one worked the one day I tested it. I decided to finally install it into the PC, I have a Morex case http://www.logicsupply.com/products/2766 and it has a DVD opening. Originally I wanted to make the DVD rom under the driver steering wheel area, but it was a mission to run a USB and power cable. Also since the PC is mounted on the back seat it was easy to reach back and change CDs. Well I installed the DVD rom, used a adapter so i can connect it to IDE, then turned on the PC. It loads, and i see the rom under My Computer, but when I slide in a CD, it does nothing, I hear the rom make noise, like its reading the CD, but when I click on the icon, it says insert disk....

    Is it maybe the laptop to IDE adapter..... Maybe the drive? Im going to connect it back to USB and see what it does!!!!!!!

    Ok, I connected the drive to the USB adapter and it works perfectly.... So the drive is ok..... So that means it is either the Laptop to IDE adapter, or the motherboard.

    Has anyone else ever had this issue? I am connecting the drive to the secondary IDE port. It shows up under my computer, but always says there is no disk. I have a M10000. I have checked the adapter, it seems in perfect shape, no breaks no nothing..... has anyone else had this issue when connecting a ROM to IDE?

    Ok from reading all the forums, alot of people have had the issue. Suposedly, it has to do with setting the drives to master and slave. Im really not sure how to do that though! My Slim CD to IDE has pins, but I do not know what they do..... How do I put the HD into master or slave. I have tried putting all the drives on one channel, which results in a ERROR NO BOOT DISK, if i put the dvd rom in channel 2 (secondary ide) the system boots fine, and windows will see the drive, but of course when I insert a disk and then click the icon, it says no disk.....

    I would love to use the drive inside the case, so its all one package, but it looks like im being forced to have to use the USB...... I would try to put the slim drive to USB board inside, but its very big and will not fit, do to the RAM stick being right there.

    If someone else has figured out a way, please help.....

    Was doing even more research and was looking on ebay. Someone was selling a slim drive to ide converter and here is what he said:

    IDE Adapter for Slim CD ROM, DVD, CDRW, CDRW+DVD COMBO . Pin 28 has been removed to force the drive to be SLAVE even if it is set by the factory to be master. Tested and working. Will ship worldwide. All sales final. Paypal only.

    Has anyone else heard of this removing pin 28...... maybe I should try this, or better yet buy his card.

    here is a link that really describes the process. http://www.unixwiz.net/techtips/ide-cable-select.html. Seems to be fairly easy. So I assume all I have to do is remove pin 28 on the adapter and plug it in and have fun!

    OK, id like to thank everyone that helped me on this issue (does sarcastic look). I connected the HD and DVD ROM on same IDE Port and powered on the PC. I recieved a boot error (this is after removing pin 28). I then took the DVD ROM off IDE port 1 and put it by itself on IDE port 2. Powered on PC, windows started to load, and immediatley windows found a new device, installed it and I watch Resident Evil Extinction, no issues what so ever. So anyone that has had the issue with the drive not showing up at all, this is the fix, I guess I could say its my first big contrabution to the forum. HAPPPPYYYY NEWWWWW YEARRRR.

    PS: That other DVD drive that kept saying no disk, turned out to be a virtual drive which I had forgotten I installed.

    you mean for sound? The adapter should have a audio out port on it. USB versions usually have a head phone jack, and the adapter has a 4 prong pin setup.

    Did you check to see of the other device on the cable was set to master, slave or CS and were you using a CS cable? I have the same CD drive and probably the same adapter and it works as master or slave depending on where it's connected. The connector is upside down of course. blah. If you remove pin 28 it's the same as connecting to the 2nd plug or cutting the wire like in the docs above.

    You really don't need SPDIF or even stereo for that matter. The audio is transfered over the IDE and decoded by Windows, unless you're using 98 or 95. Just pop a DVD in and watch the AC3 decoder. It's all software now.

    From what I have read, my drive was a master by default.... I had to pull pin 28 to make it slave. I tried about 7 diffrent IDE cables, all with the same boot error. I mean Im fine with the setup now, using IDE 2 is no big deal...... I think it is the same, it just would not work though.............. if the connector is upside down then the drive light will stay on all the time.... trust me I did it enough times, lol....
