help... i wanna overclock my P1-200mHz

    Hi guys

I have some experience O/C-ing... because, accidentally i was fooling w/ jumper settings on my other computer (P2-266mHz) and that computer is running at 462 mHz w/ no problems at all. The thing is... I need some help w/ overclocking this one because I'm not too familiar w/ it.

I am guessing there are jumper settings that i can fool around w/ on the motherboard... but is it possible to overclock a pentium 1? Currently, it's 200 mhz... how far can i push it? I understand I need cooling, i was thinking of buying a socket 7 heatsink w/ a built in fan that says it cools up to 800mHz. I know i can never get it that high... but i'd like to speed this up a bit.

This mother board is from an old Sony Vaio PCV-120. Any help or clues into how I can get info on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.

    a) what do you plan on doing with it that requires overclocking?
    b) is this out of a laptop (viao)? ... if this is, you can't overclock it without some major surgery (usually). Overclocking desktop components is easy, however o/cing laptops is usually very very hard.

An extra 20-30mhz back in the p1 days was something to write home about, as you just increased the speedd by a large percentage, but anymore, that 30mhz isnt going to help all that much (meaning if the software has problems running with a 200mhz processor, a 220mhz processor isnt going to help much). And as teltek said, if its a laptop, break out your sodering iron. if its a desktop, you might be able to adjust the fsb or the multiplier (p1's wernt yet multiplier locked, right?).

Thanks for the info guys. This is a desktop... and old computer I had for a while that I've decided to turn into my in-car PC. It's primary use is for winamp and mediaplayer/divx for movies so far (windows98 SE). I was thinking of pushing up to 233mhz or so... maybe even 266 but recently i read a couple websites and they warned that i could seriously fry a pentium 1, trying to overclock that far... just wondering if anyone else had done this before. Thanks tho, ill buy the heatsink+fan ($2) anyways and O/C it to 233mHz.

keep in mind too that higher speed means more power required to run it.

can you do divx on a 233? I thought it required more than that...

    In either case, good luck.
