Thread: anything wrong with hooking up xm AND radio to same line-in?

ok guys.. the more i think about it the more i wish to find a new sound card to make this setup work.. so hows this bad boy look..

i dont really care about the video but hey it might be nice for something.. what i want is quality sound and inputs and this thing says it has inputs for a multitude of devices

looks like it has 2 line-ins i can run straight to rca with. It offers 7.1 (not that it matters in the car) and has a built in 4 port hub

that's a nice device, but it's alot of money to spend for what you're going to use it for...

I'd LOVE it.. but its pci. It MUST be external.

why does it need to be external?

the D201GLY has a PCI slot... are you using it for something else or is it a space issue? if so, could you fit it in sideways with a PCI riser?

that device you're looking at buying is major overkill to simply mix two analog audio sources.

it has a pci slot but my case is 6x8x2 so there's no way any card can go in there.. hell i couldnt even fit my 2.5 inch drive comfortably so thats in an external case. and i fully agree that its overkill but apparrently (suprisingly) there arent many external cards with more than one line-in

it would be cheaper and more practical to get a bigger case. one that can fit your PCI card (sideways) and your HDD. space can't be a big issue because your external HDD and that hughe external sound card together would take up more space than a larger case would

another option you could consider is mounting the PCI card outside the case? you could use standoffs to mount the card directly to the outside of the case, or mount it in a small plastic box. you could use a ribbon cable PCI riser like this to extend it outside the case.



you've already got your HDD mounted externally so it shouldn't be too different from that. -just trying to give you some cheaper options

Sounds to me like you may want to consider a used USB sound device. I have an old Hercules Muse laying around gathering dust. Or you may consider converting your XM to SPDIF and using an old Creative Extigy 5.1.

Yes, but wouldn't that create the same problem you didn't like with my aux in solution, that you would have to mute/unmute using windows mixer to switch between the two sources?

So why dont you just go to bestbuy or radioshack and get you splitter. one male to two female because you can't listen to Xm and radio at same time anyways. So just turn the xm software off when using a radio and other way around for xm.
