    Found another lcd that looks really good,
    Toshiba LTA070B0N0A;
    http://tmd-product.tmdisplay.com/dow...B0N0A-V01R.pdf

    it's a 7" wide screen that would fit perfect.
    And looks to be around the $200 price range.

    wow, nice find! that really would be a perfect fit (6.5" x 3.9")

    ...odd resolution though. 480 x 234. the default resolution is probably too low for computer use, I wonder how it would look when scaled up to 800 x 600? :/

    Don't use that LCD. The res will be completely unacceptable to almost all car PC guys.

    So I did some more research on LCD and found a few that were WVGA (800 x 480) and included a timing circuit to make it compatible with VGA (640 x 480) or so they say.
    They were also 7" 16:9 format and maxed out my available display area at 166.3mm x 105.3mm (probably close to the Lilliput's size) which brings up another question or problem...

    A "dual-din" opening may have a chassis that is 2-din's high but the bezel may be larger, sometimes much larger. However in most cases I would assume that it's within 2-5mm larger, considering that aftermarket head units are between 100mm and 105mm that's the range I'm trying to keep within.

    With these displays measuring 105.3mm high it's gonna be a tight fit so I don't want to design a universal, in-dash unit that only fits 15% of the cars out there.

    You will need a 6.5" LCD like the Infill G4 if you want true double din. The ones I tried to use were:

    Toshiba LQ065T5GG02
    Toshiba LQ065Y5DG01
    AU Optronics C065VL01
    AU Optronics C065VL02

    All of these are 6.5" 800X480 and less than 100mm tall. But I could not get an LVDS or VGA interface for any of these in quantities of less than 1000. All of them have a TTL interface.

    New Specs

    I requested a quote for production and sample prices for the following display components;

    -7" WVGA (800x480) TFT LED back-light with anti-glare treatment (165mm x 104mm)
    -Compatible sunlight readable 4-wire resistive touch screen (proprietary anti-reflective coating)
    -Touch screen controller USB or RS-232
    choice of control boards:
    -VGA(15-pin D-sub) only
    -VGA(15-pin), S-Video & Composite(RCA) inputs. Not sure if this is switchable on the board with a terminal or based on connection...

    I'm anticipating this to be under $350 plus the cost of the chassis, remember it's "sunlight readable".

    I may be able to fit a 104mm high display in the bezel but it will wind up being around 106mm high (4.173"). However the chassis will still conform to the dual din size.

    If not I will look into the 6.5" screens.

    Going that route will get you to an end product that is very similar to the WRX bolt in screen that Mp3car sells. If you are still trying to do the slot-load then you MUST go 6.5 or smaller, or use a flip-down screen.

    If you can make what is essentially the same product as what sells for $500 for only $350 then I say go for it!

    if you can make/sell a double-DIN sunlight readable VGA screen for $350 then you'll have a killer product!

    The idea is to make a true 2-din chassis with a touchscreen that you could then populate with components including a small form factor MB or other perfs.

    It may be similar in theory but vastly different in reality.
    I don't feel the WRX version is adequate for most applications as the display size is limited to a narrow range of vehicles. It also has an open chassis that requires customization if you want to incorporate a mother board or other hardware.
    Also the Lilliput's that it's designed for are not sunlight readable, if you want a sunlight readable monitor to fit in your dash you have to get the WRX chassis with the Transflective Lilliput, that would run you close to $900... I'm trying to keep it under $500... we'll see. the quote i got back was close to $400, the touchscreen was a lot more than I had anticipated.

    Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great product if you have one of the cars that it will fit in, unfortunately for me my car is not one of those.
