The Hard Drives Are Against Me!!!!

Has any one ever had trouble taking removeable hd bays in and out? I had a 100gig that I was going to take out of my home pc and put in my carputer but when I put it in the car pc would not see the drive and when I put it back in my home pc the same thing. I have tried changing the jumper and I can not get it to work. It had a bootable os and worked fine in my home pc before. I had the carputer working with a smaller hard drive before, The only diffrence is that I loaded the os onto a formated drive that was in a removable drive bay in my carputer, the other 2 drives had the OS loaded on when they were hooked to the home pc. I can't figure it out. Almpost ready to go in and I have problems like this. Any body know if there is somthing I can do to get files off a nonworking HD? I don't want to have to rip all of my music again. Thanks
Ok so I am back into it!!

    i had this problem.

the housing for the hd was not properly connected to the piece that you screw into your pc, or it was crooked or something.
I didn't bother and put the hd in one of the usual spots and havent movet it after that

One thing about your post bothers me though. In it you mention that you've installed an O/S on this drive. Unless both your Carputer and your desktop are built EXACTLY the same this is going to be nothing but trouble. Windows will have to redetect all the hardware every time you move the drive between computers. I recommend a small, old laptop HD for a boot drive and using this one as a slave to only store your MP3's on. That way no matter what you still have access to the Carputer, even when the 100G is removed.

My plan was to just keep my 60gig in my home pc and my 100gig in my car pc ad just switch the 100 when I have new songs or movies to put on it. Well now my 60 gig will only work in my home pc if I have the OS disk in the cdrom. the 100gig gives me some partmgr.sys when I boot it in my home pc with the OS cd. Anyone know what this is?

You didn't try to hotswap the drives, right? Other than that, it sounds as if the drives might just be corrupted, and needing a reinstall of the os, which you should do anyway if you're going to have the 100 booting the carpc.

No I did not hot swap anything. I figure I would have to format dut just wanted my files off it first. There was 60 gigs of music that I will have to rip all over again because I dident make a backip first I had someone tell me that the IDE controler may be to slow of somthing. I have a Epia 800 as seen in my sig. Has anyone else had any problems or know about this?

This whole conversation has be very confused. Can you go step by step on what you are trying to do and what isn't working? Include all error messages, and all detail. I'm not really sure anyone here knows what you're actually trying to say, hence the much different answers. It's important to be very clear about problems...

I origionaly was going to use my 60gig in a removable bay in my carputer. I loaded the os and everything worked fine. I could take it out of the carputer and put it im mmy home pc to update my files. It has taken me some time to get everything ready and I have got alot of new music and started getting some divx. So I decided to take the 100 that had an os on it and worked fine in my home pc and put it into a removable bay and use it in my Carputer because I needed the extra space. Then I would put my 60gig and this other 40gig in my home pc. When I took the 100 out and put it into my carputer it wouldent work. Then When I tried to put the 60 gig in my home pc it wouldent work either. So I was going to put everything back to the origional way and my home pc wouldent even see my 100 gig. I tried putting the jumper every way and nothing. Then to get somthing working I was going to repair the os on the 60 gig and use it to get me online. The 60gig will only work with the xp home cd in the cdrom. I get all of my data that is saved on the drive. So I thought I would do the same thing with the 100 but it dosent work. I get the windows was not shutdown properly screen when I try to start normal, in safe mode, or the last good boot the screen just goes black. I finaly got it to give me a blue screen that said there was some problem with the partmgr.sys. I just want my files off this drive and then I will format and start over. Thanks for all your help.

Please define "doesn't work". So you can boot Windows? Can you see the drive in the BIOS?

Looks to me like the BIOS settings aren't matching. Try autodetecting the drive, and switching between the three settings choices it gives you (if it gives you these choices).
