USB DVD connection problem with XP

I have problem with my USB DVD. I have many times though problem solved, but it has always reappeared.

My system is an MII12000, a panasonic USB DVD and also a Huawei200 3G modem (with internal mass storage device meant for installation that I have disabled in control panel. This device will still often 'pause' the system at boot so that it has to be disconnected for the boot to continue).

DVD is connected via CIB-650 monitor, but I beleive that it just passes on USB straight thru. I power DVD separately from my own 5V DC/DC.

    I have tried this:
    - connected DVD directly to USB port, avoiding hub
    - flashed latest bios 1.37
    - updated usb drivers
    - there is no powersave option enabled
    - patch KB892050 from microsoft

Most of the time the DVD starts if I disconnect/reconnect the power to it, but it is not enough to disconnect/reconnect USB.

Please help. I'm out of ideas and don't even know what to google next.

See if removing all other USB devices fixes it.

Well, not really a solution but I will try it as a way to get a handle on the problem. Have you had (/solved) USB problems?

If that fixes your issue you know that one of the other USB devices is screwing it up and you can, through trial and error, find which one it is.

The computer I'm on right now is a nice, new, fast system but will not boot at all with a USB mouse plugged in. Took me forever to figure it out, but that's USB for ya!

USB devices share a root hub on your PC. If one of the devices is screwing up the hub, the other devices on it may have problems. BTW, I am not talking about what most people think of as a USB hub. I mean a hardware chip in the PC controlled by a root hub driver.

You were onto something! the DVD came up straight away when that was the only USB device. At least once :-) Well, now I've just got to corner the bogus device.

Thanks. (I'll update thread when done)

Not again. It worked a couple of reboots but not anymore... I don't know how many times I've thought problem solved. What I will do now is to make sure it comes up every time I power it up when PC has booted....

Well, at least I now know its not one of the other USB devices :-)

    Any more idees?

Do you use it all the time? In my system I am leaving the DVD drive disconnected until I need it. I don't use CDs/DVDs that often. I don't know if this is an option for you.

You may want to try and upgrade the firmware of the drive. Check with the manufacturer for that.

Is the drive fully powered by USB or is there an external DC in? If it is powered by USB you may want to try running a dedicated 5V to it from your PSU.

And of course, make sure all your BIOS and drivers are up to date.

EDIT: Sorry, looks like you covered a lot of these already in the first post.

    Thanks Jeremy

Yes, I tried to put all the tips that I've found so far on the first post :-)

But, I did not know I could update firmware of drive. I will check with Panasonic.

Also I have found an interesting tool that could help. A command propt device manager. devcon

In case the problem is solved by power on when I need it I can solve that with my 8051 power controller. I just need some more hours on the clock :-) Trying to fix this now when its warm.

Well its tricky but it looks like the problem is with USB somehow, either the USB connection itself or the 5V power...
