I am looking for a system that will detect when I am close to my car and unlock my doors for me automatically and lock them when I leave.
5-10 feet would be ideal.
Something like this but for door locks instead
This alarm looks pretty cool. It odes proximity lock/unlock
There's a post somewhere that has a link to a system on ebay that does proximity lock/unlock and was selling for less than $50. Might not be a great alarm system, but at <$50, it would be worth it just for the lock/unlock feature alone.

Well here is an old post that didn't seem to go anywhere http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/gene...ter-power.html

Mine will be using a home automation program called HomeSeer.
However, if you can you some vbscript or .NET scripting you could easily use the hardware found at this site:
Mine is backwards, my transmitters are in my cars telling my home when the vehicles are there.
They have a keyfob that when combined with a receiver in your car, hooked to your cap pc serial port, will give you what you want.
You may email the guy that runs the site, his name is Piperpilot. He may have some sort of stand alone application.
The last thing I want is another key fob/dongle/appendage. I have been holding out for the bluetooth solution because I hope to be able to trigger it with my phone (which is a big enough appendage that is always on me). Also with the latest flurry of new phones, most have bluetooth, so any one I want to allow access just has to spend a few minutes getting paired and voila. I recognize its not the most secure method so other redundancies will have to be applied, but I think its the most viable option at this time.
That said, I also recognize I have other issues to deal with: a) I have three cars so when I go to the garage will they all unlock, b) proximity of the garage and where I charge my cell may unlock all cars, c) I also want alarm and remote start which I currently do with a key fob xmitter or as a backup a phone call so I still have to carry the stupid remote along with the keys.
In a perfect world, I would have programs on my Pocket PC phone for each car that works over the internet or wifi that I can initiate separately, perform remote start, automatically arm/disarm alarm and door locks via proximity (confirmations/warnings would be sent to my phone directly and via text message), and once inside vehicle use thumbprint ID to start/disengage killswitch. Someone build this and I'd be first in line to buy it!
Well put, good sir. Well put.

Once again HomeSeer (www.homeseer.com) has a solution for that, they have a Bluetooth plugin that does proximity.
I see JohnWPB all over this board, he knows a lot about HomeSeer also.
If you use the correct BT stack (based on whatever BT dongle you buy) you can even get signal strength rather than just in/out of range.
What I have found is BT things are a real PITA as far as reliability when it comes to things like proximity. Those Bluetooth stack embed themselves deep into the operating system and cause other issues.
Good luck! Bill
