    HTPC ideas

well i've put mp3car on hold for a little bit. my current project is a HTPC for dvd/mp3/divx. I am currently still in planning and early construction stages. my goal is to build build my htpc into an old sony satelite reciever case that i have gutted. its big enough to hold a micro atx mobo and already has some buttons on the front that i have wired to a keyboard controller. i managed to find some combinations that are recognized by girder but not by the os so i dont have to worry about trying to block keystrokes or anything. i want to make it as much like a piece of home theatre equipment as i can.

there are some problems that i have come accross so far. one is that i will be usin an all in wonder radeon and a high end sound card(not sure which one yet) but the sytem will be very low profile so i need to either buy or make pci and agp flexible extenders. or at least right angle adapters. i have not yet found a cheap source for these.

Annother problem is that about half the ports will need to be used internally. and the rest externally. so i was wondering if there is any problem with removing some of the ports and just replaceing them with headers for internal use. or simply removing them completly. I dont really need a paralell port. the reduced height of the connctors would make the board fit better too.

Ive tried asking around at some computer shops and radio shack, but everyone looks at me like i'm nuts. i figured this was as good a place as any to ask for help / opinions.

here is the mobo i plan on using http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2079498452

this is the satelite reciever i picked up at goodwill

i plan on using a slot load dvd mounted in the center, only cutting the slot on the front of the unit of course.

It looks like i should have sold the reciever , there's a guy on ebay trying to sell one for over $100

any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated

are you going to be able to get both an AGP *and* PCI card in there?

IIRC most PCI/AGP risers are just for right angles, so you can only get 1 card. Do you know if you can get PCI risers that extend a good inch before the right angle connector?

i found this site that makes the risers. http://www.adexelec.com/pci32.htm#PCITX4-6

they have almost and type of riser that you can think of.

i found annother site that had price lists and ordering info but i seem to have misplaced the link.

i think it was in annother thread on this forum. if anyone knows any more sources for these things let me know.

You might want to look at the AVS forums HTPC forum. They have some pretty neat stuff, including HDTV capture and a bunch of custom software. Check them out here

I've seen mobo with half way decent 6.1 on board sound... I'm pretty sure one of them was a microatx.

I'm sorry I can't give you more info, it's been a long month and my memory isn't doing to well right now

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation

i checked out avs a little bit. they seem to talk more about the highest quality suff posssible, i simply dont have the budget for some of that.

are there any sites about building small form factor pc's? i looked at www.mini-itx.com but they only deal with epias. i dont think one of those is quite powerful enough. or any sites on mobo modding?

I just remembered the board.. it's the new soyo dragon.

It's a $79 motherboard, full atx. You don't think that would fit in the housing?

If you want good onboard sound in a microatx form factor, the NForce/Nforce2 with the dolby southbridge is supposed to be quite good, on par with a SB Live!, and the AVS folks do tend to get carried away with getting the perfect sound quality and the perfect this and that, but then, they're all audio nuts, can you blame them? (well you can for them acting like snobs, but its their money that they're spending on their $1500 sound cards ).

    Progress Update:

i know this isn't exactly mp3 car related, but i do get a LOT of useful info for my project from this site so i thought you all might like to know how things are going for me.
so far i have to mobo mounted in the case.

i modded a power supply to fit, also replaced the fan with a quieter one, that also has cool blue LEDs.

i hacked a keyboard to use with the front pannel buttons.

    laptop HD is installed.

ATI all in wonder radeon is installed.

using left over cd rom for testing untill my slim slot dvd arrives.

currently working with girder to make a control profile. Right now it can switch between using the front buttons to move the mouse or to control various programs, which are automatically detected and the correct control profile is used. i have a profile made up for using a remote, but i have yet to order an irman.

now, some questions. I am currently runnning winXP pro. i want to try out 98lite. is there any reason that one is better than the other for an htpc. install size is not that important, boot time is only somewhat important.

one more problem that i have run into is that with my agp card in place on the riser it lays flat on the pci slots. so there is no way to use a riser of any kind, i dont think i could even fit in a flexible one. i have a philips sound card that i am very impressed with that i want to use in the system. the only thing that i vcan think of is to remove one of the pci slots from the mobo so only the pins remain and then using some ribbon cable to extend the solt to a different location. i have a pci slot that i hacked off a dead mobo. is there any reason that if done carefully this would not work?

Also what is the best way to determine where to put fans for optimum air flow through a compact case?

i would post pics of my progress, but i currently dont have a digicam.

I don't know how much room inside you have to work with, but there are combo agp/pci risers which might give you what you're looking for. Also, for a HTPC, I would think that you'd want it on all the time, so XP would probably be better in that respect.
