I think we're having a few problems with definitions! Old sound cards like the SB16 had an onboard power amplifier, which would clip if you drove it too hard.

All sound cards have some sort of pre-amplifier though to output at line level voltage. Pre-amp IC quality varies, some onboard ones are pretty nasty, and they can clip too.. You're probably hearing your soundcard's pre-amp clipping / distorting.
