I think the new VIA Nano, combined with their VX800 chip will be the next low power king, it may not be priced as low as an atom board or the little valley board, but should beat both handily, especially when considering HD video. Now we just need touchscreens that can handle HD resolutions
TruckPC - gutted, being used for test setup
BoatPC - off season - Inelmac screen needs serviced again!
BlazerPC - last vehicle PC I'll build

I swapped from a little valley to an atom with no apparent change in performance + or -. The post does 'seem' to go by quicker but I think that is a difference in bios and not necessarily horsepower.

Interesting. Do you get the same performance when running multiple programs, visualizations, GPS, etc with the Atom?

Yeah that's what I expected as I made an educated guess that a 1.2 Ghz Celeron 220 was approx equal to a 1.6 Ghz Atom in some other threads based on some CPU benchmarks. FPU operations are slower on the Atom but I don't think we'll find any carpc apps that heavily depends on that. I'm glad to hear it's about the same.

I'm using Road Runner w/ robby's e36 skin. Thus far the performance is identical as far as I can tell. Using R2 Vis (Rabidhamster.org), IG etc all seems to be working quite well albeit some 30C cooler

Thumbs down Atom Benchmarked against Celeron

Just FYI, I googled this and found a couple reviews/benchmarks answer our burning question: Is this atom proc 'really' that much slower than a celeron? Spoiler: Yes, it is.

Here's the most detailed 'performance' oriented review I could find (also comparing to Celeron): http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...7595&Itemid=40

Good high level overview, links to a more detailed review: http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/06/first-real-worl.html

I've been reading that the Atom is indeed slower than the Celerons like those links pointed out. But people in this thread have said the performance in a real-world carPC is nearly the same.

Maybe the performance difference between the two is not a factor in a carPC environment?

I cant comment on the on board sound of either board I have never even touched them, I will be using the onboard line in shortly though for hd radio w/ output to the hippo dac.

Im gonna go out on a limb here and agree with matt11601 on this one. I don't think what I am doing with either board is taxing enough to note a difference. I am not using it to playback video w/ ffdshow or do anything htpc-esque. Road Runner, Nav, Ibus, R2 Viz here and there, maybe some light m2v mpg divx and that is pretty much it, thus far its performing well.
