ATAPI DVD - Power & Interference?

Searched a while, learned a lot about slot-load DVDs, but....

I'm in the middle of installing a plain old ATAPI/IDE DVD-ROM in my 3rd DIN slot of my Accord. (First I got install the 3rd DIN bracket )

Anyway, I will try a long IDE cable, but what about powering the sucker?

Do you guys just tap your car's head untit power source or do you go from the mobo? Any interference from the power if it's from the mobo?

Power is by far my weakest knowledge area of this project.

    Just curious,
    Vikram

is that a trey load dvd drive? if so there are some people who use them with no problems and I've had friends who tried and it destroyed dvd's and cd's. I'd always use a slot load in a car application.

    Yup, a tray.

I might hold off a few months and invest in a slot. Seems like many are using them.

But is the slot powered any differently?

    Thanks,
    Vikram

depends on the slot dvd you get. your slim slot. for laptops or imacs I think is powered differently.. don't hold me to that one.

the normal 5.25 inch slot dvd is powered the same same. Looks just like your tray load but has a slot instead. Thats what I use and it works great.

Give it a try with a large power cable off of the power supply. If you have problems with interference, it is a very simple matter to add a few inductors and capacitors to make a simple filter.
