    Headunit Hacking.. Crazy idea..

I just got this idea.. I'm not sure how well it will work, of course I'm sure some head units would work better for it than others..

I've been considering getting a new head unit instead of an amp so I can retain my am/fm tuning capabilities..

I've also been considering getting a used cd playing head unit and hacking it to put in my cd rom, replace the LCD with my own, and wire up the buttons.

Suddenly it just occured to me... maybe I can hack appart a working head unit.. strip out the cd player replace it with my slim slot loading DVD rom, rig up a couple of the buttons to work the controls for the computer, and still shome how retain the radio tuning capabilities and amplification.

I know it sounds crazy.. but I think if I could find the right unit it might be possible.

    Comments and Suggestions appreciated here!

i actually thought of doing that myself, if you get the right head unit unit it definately is possible. the cd mechanism thats in head units is very close to the size of a slim slot dvd. i would try it if i had a old head unit laying around.

Perhaps you can get a broken junkyard unit cheap that was a factory piece. It would make any would be theif pass since it looks stock.

The stock units usually have nice big buttons as well...

I bet keeping FM would be pretty hard, you'd probaby be better off finding a separate AM/FM tuner.

o Nokia n800 on the way.
o Crappy Sony head unit that needs replacing (but it has 3 sets of pre-outs and aux in)
o Progress to come after I fix some of my car's mechanical issues.

    I had a similar question

I really wanted a decent radio back in the car and I have come up with an idea for those that got rid of their headunits and went with an amp for audio. Would it be possible to just use the pre-amp outputs on some headunits and tie it to the line in on the computer and just make some kind of application that just passes the audio thru to the speakers kinda like the default sound recorder that comes with all windows.

There have been some folks doing similar things...such as entire computer in a DIN case. But if you had more room than a DIN behind the dash, you could make the display/faceplate look normal, but a larger box behind the dash housing your dvd drive (if you had a space issue...
