    600watt inverter off Cig lighter?

    I have a 600watt inverter laying around,
    I want to use it JUST to power my laptop charger so I can listen to some music in the car.
    Can I just splice a plug for the cigarette lighter, since just using about 50watts for the charger won't be pulling that much?
    Or does it need to be hardwired like its supposed to be?
    Would it blow the 10amp fuse for the lighter when it powers up and chargers its capacitors?

    I wouldnt use an inverter straight off the cig lighter, period

    But... ehm.. most likely.. it would blow...

    I = Current (Amp)
    U= Voltage (Volt)
    P= Power (Watts)

    I = P/U

    I = 600W / 12V

    I = 50A <--- Too much.. :P

    But of course.. it would probably work... as your not using the Inverter to the fullest.... (but when you ever build something (electrical i mean) ... you should allways keep in mind.. that the fuse should be bigger than the max current the device could pull (and of course your cables needs to be the right dimension..)

    go off your battery instead. cig lighter is always a bad idea.

    In the manual for my 300W inverter, it states that you can run it off the included cig lighter adapter IF you are running under 150 (over 12.5 amps DC but that's what it says) or less. It's only a 300W inverter though but I’m guessing that it would work with your 600W one if your only pulling 50W for the computer.
    Comp. Specs:Shuttle SS40G, Athlon XP 1700+, 256MB DDR, 40GB HD, Belkin Desktop 802.11b card (good range), SB 128 sound (onboard is a bit noisy), DVD ROM
    Toshiba 100CS laptop, P75 40mb ram, 550MB HD, Megahertz LAN/modem PC card, modified to run off 12VDC
    Other stuff:Generic USB hub & USB to serial adapters, BS2SX power control system w/battery buffer, Jazz 300W Inverter, FM Modulator, Palm Vx, & GPS

    Status: 80% complete (Almost done with the controle boxes)
