    Some sort of switch board...?

I am just entering the world of custom electronics. It has always been an interest, but I have only now begun to study the parts and methods of building electronics.

That said, how can I build some thing that acts like a switch board?

I have cuise control in the car, and I am trying to get an Audio Control MVC (Master Volume Control). The curise control has 4 momentary push-buttons on the wheel, and I would like to set them up as volume control buttons. Although, I want to retain the use of the cruise control.

I was thinking, why not have a switch somewhere, that would switch between the 4 buttons being used as cruise control, and them being used as volume / track buttons. My first solution, was a board that has 4 two way switches (or relays), and depending on the position of the master, the other 4 would change.

    Is there an easier way?

The board would need to be small, and allow for volume control to work with other switches at the same time the baord is in use (switched to volume control).

Let me know if i need to elaborate.

    Loads of ideas.

There are plenty of 4 pole double throw switches out there, you might simply consider one of those.

    Best regards,

I have looked around the internet every-now-and-then since your post, but I cannot seem to find any 4 pole double throw switches. Is there another name that they may use?

Hi clay. The term you want to look for is 4PDT.

But there are better ways to do this. For one thing, this will only work if your present switches have a specific configuration, which you can check for, but maybe not all that easy.

Your present switches must be momentary, normally-open switches that short the signal to ground, for this to work. The signal lines that are "switched" must use the equivalent of pull-up resistors to hold them at 12VDC also.

This is sorta what your dealing with:

The part in the blue box should be whats in your dash, the part in the red box should be whats in your steering wheel, and the part in between should be a harness that runs up your steering column.

If there's a connector somewhere on the column, you can measure between that point (of each switch) and ground. It should show 5 to 12 volts when your not pressing any switch, and go to 0 volts, or ground, when you press one.

If this is, in fact, what you have, we can go forth from there.

I would advise against this on a safety principle. Any controls for your car player should be in addition to, and seperate from, any controls which control the motion of your car.

I would be deftly afraid if my carpc EVER had some form of control over the operation of my car. Are you willing to put your life in the hands of M$ programmers?

I am not using the switch to control the cruise control, in fact, just the opposite. By wiring this the way i want to, it will in effect disable the cruise control. Or should i say, curse control. It's horrible.

    Thanks anyway.
