    AM/FM or XM/Sirrus

The dilemma: FM/AM radio for the carputer.

I'm going to go with a headless system, Xenarc screen in-dash. Now, the big problem, “What about Radio?”. I really don’t care about AM so there goes that. I have a USB D-Link FM thing. Input vol sucks (doesn't really work too well with the EPIA-M) and I can’t get any reception in the house, don’t know how it will act in the car. Not going to spend 3 bills or whatever on http://www.icomamerica.com/. I saw that Shinkuno Namida had posted something similar and was maybe looking in to am/fm walkman jacked into the line in, not a bad idea and might just end up doing this, although....

I went to the audio shop today and checked out this XM/Sirrus Radio stuff. Looks pretty nice, the only downside is that you got to pay. I currently have DirectTV and love the music channels so it might be worth it. The guy who owns the shop (a friend of mine) says that he as it and never listens to radio (AM/FM) anymore. He said he doesn’t even listen to CD any more. My question: Anybody running a carputer with XM/Sirrus? If so, how do you like it. Quality is supposedly very good.

I have XM, it's alright. I've had it since March. I have the Pioneer that connects over the IP-bus to my head unit. Sound quality on the music channels isn't up to par with CD's but it's not far behind. I like the variety that it offers and the news/talk channels that you can’t find on conventional radio.

A lot more can be found about Xm radio at a site a visit occasionally. www.clubxm.com

I agree the XM could be great.
    (I don't have it.)

I think a lot of people simply don't want to pay the monthly fee's.

If they were to drop such a service to $5, I'm sure they'd get tons of people to sign up. Just so they could say they have it...

    Just my thoughts...

I think the whole XM/Sirrus idea would get business if they dropped the monthly rate completely, and just made the equipment cost a little more, or if they had a one-time setup fee, because montly bills is something every already has too much of.

You can pay monthy or one shot for a year, or one shot for three years. Cheaper as you go up. I'm not really concerned by the cost, I'm more interested in if it can replace FM. I figure I only listen to FM for the music and Sirrus is music with out comercials.

I saw someone who replaced the backlight LED's. I think they changed it to green, but you could just as easily change it to blue (which isn't easy!)

Been looking for sometime at one of those in Silver with Black interior
