    Post some questions

ok, new user here. i was really set on getting an empeg, but the money is a big issue, and i would rather do it myself anyway. some questions though.

    1. what is the deal with the shutdown cards that i have seen on this board? what do they do? will they let me turn the pc off with no ill effects?

    2. i really would like to use an large lcd display. something around 8 inches. i looked at www.flat-panel.com, but am confused about what i need. do i need a special type of video card, or can some of these screens hook into normal video cards?

any info would be most appreciated.

    thanks,

    jeremy

check out http://www.allelec.com/VGALCD.html , they have some 9.5" displays. I bought the grey-scale version, and am quite pleased. If you want to go this route I would by the screen first and then a mobo. I had a problem using the LCD on only one mobo (Gigabyte), but LCD works pretty well. It's hard to see the grey-scale in brightlight (ie: afternoons), you'll need to shade it somehow.

These LCDs come with ISA video controllers, so it's a no brainer -- it'll either work or it won't.

Shutdown cards are un-nescessary--unless youre paranoid. If you just stop the music and then turn the computer off nothing will happen (make sure you disable "scandisk after bad shutdown" with tweakui or msconfig if you have win98).. Shutting off computer wrong only does bad if a file is in use at that time, so if youre not running any otehr programs, and stop the music first, it should be fine. I havent had any prob's with shutdown-
