    PC Chassis Ground

I don't plan on using a case for my pc, but rather a rack-like setup with everything either mounted to some sheet metal or wood in the compartment in my trunk, havent worked all the details out yet.

I'm worried about grounding I guess... Do I need to mount everything to some sheet metal (ie.. the mobo standoffs, the HD Radio case, the m2-atx, hdd) as a common ground? Or can I just mount them to anything, anywhere and make sure the ground leads from each piece of hardware goes to a common ground on the car chassis? and not worry about the components chassis?

    Hopefully that makes sense

Your Motherboard should have a good ground through its connection to the power supply (ATX 20/24 pin). All peripherals will then share the motherboard ground. So you should be good with your rack setup, just make sure the power supply is grounded properly.

Relatively new to the art of installing a computer in a car, though mine is in and running, but I have been building pcs and using... alternative cases for years.

There is often talk of the need for motherboard grounding and suggesting it be grounded in common with a psu and psu ground line (ac cord ground typically) but-

The ONLY cases I have seen this really seem required are with high-powered external video cards. (And even then I wonder if it is due as much to an existing motherboard fault.)

I have never seen it be an issue with integrated graphics or "weaker" video cards.
I didn't bother with my system, which has an ATI 9200, nor would I bother doing it with ANY system unless it has a video card with a molex for power.

(My system is housed in a non-conductive box and the only ground it gets IS through the power supply.)

    Smile my two cents

I have attached three pics on how I have installed my motherboard. I have it on the back of a board that is placed in the hatch of my car. The actually MB is screwed to a cut out of an old computer case. I believe this would be ok to have the correct grounding, however I am no pro yet. But again my carpc is working pretty well and has been for about 6 months. Please add some advise if anyone thinks the way I have mine is not a good I deal!

    Thanks Phil

FPeter, i guess if you have room to put it there. DAMN! Crazy.

    roflcopter,
Anyways, For noise, proper grounding too all parts would be advisable. My home pc audio sometimes will get noise if my VGA cable is too close to the speaker wires. not that i dont have a huge rats nest of cables and connectors shoved under my desk

My Alpine stereo will have noise on the aux if my epia MII12000 pc is off. i think my audio ground is not the best and i only get good ground once the pc powers up.

Anyways good to be thinking about it for your design. I would ground the motherboard grounds to something. You will find out right away if you dont have good grounds and your video or audio have static. Good luck.

    again crazy place FPeter
