OK, I see.... USB 2.0 is 480 mbps and FireWire is 400 mbps. They say Firewire is faster because of its sustained throughput. My bad, I was only paying attention to the 480 vs 400.

Yeah, its just like when IDE claims it CAN do 133 MB/s or whatever medium you want. They never actually go that fast consistently.

And, firewire is especially useful for those of us that have USB 1.1.

    Thanks for the link!

One question though, can you boot off a firewire port if you had a 2.5" HD enclosure? I found one of those once, can't seem to locate it now...

My problem is that I have a USB 2.0 enclosure, and so far it seems pretty hit or miss as to whether or not it gets detected, and I'm not sure why.

Welcome to the club....That is the unfortunate reality of USB 2.0 Enclosures. No matter what website/store told you it would work great they are full of crap...That's why I wanted to see if anyone could tell "just ONE" that worked..No one has yet...Just fire wire..

    This is what I have
    Slim, slot load drive:

    USB 2.0 Enclosure
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817708010

As best I can tell the enclosure is the same that is/was on the MP3car.com store.

Also, to note I have only bench tested this setup, through multiply boots it worked just fine, also run through a hub it worked fine and never had an issue with it. Played DVD's and would read cd's and install software, I just didn't test the burning capabilities.

Sorry for not too much help as both items are "deactivated" on newegg but you might be able to find them on other sites.

Maybe it has something to do with distance. I use 4 USB 2.0 enclosures on my home PC with no issues at all. 2 of them are 2.5 and the other 2 are 3.5. Now when I originally was going to put my DVD drive in the front dash, I use an USB 2.0 enclosure and I had so many issues because of the length of the cable run. In the end i decided to keep the DVD rom connected to the IDE with the PC since it is right on the side of me.
