    50 pin IDE DVD

For a Internal Laptop DVD with a 50 pin IDE, is it possible to use the hard drive conversion adapter to change it to 40 pin IDE?

Alphared, are you sure its IDE? Generaly, IDE is 40-pin, SCSI is 50-pin. Although, I know that sometimes laptops do things "wierd".

50 pin is the 40 IDE pins plus power and sound...

if you search the forum you'll find adapters for laptop cd/dvd drives

Vickumar used to have 'em, I don't know if anyone else does. I know for certain www.caseoutlet.com does.

    most likely...

generally, the connections on the 50 pin are set up so that the 40 pin ide connections are as they are on a normal HD, and the remaining 10 pins are for power, audio, and possibly drive selection (master/slave).

you will need to hook up the power to the drive, and unless the drive is digital audio compatible, you will need to hook up the audio as well.

well this is the DVD adapter

which doesn't fit. The back of the DVD looks like the back of the harddrive.

so I was referring to this:

the problem is that the pins on that line up to the power on the laptop hard drive.. if they fall improperly on the DVD drive it's toast.

If your DVD player doesnt have a JAE 50 pin connector visible (standard laptop cdrom), then it probably has a custom adapter screwed in over it. I ran into this when I was looking into using a salvaged eMachine eOne slim cdrom drive that had such a adapter screwed to the drive. Removing the propriatary adapter revealed the common laptop cdrom connector.

well, the 50 pin is visible. i have a toshiba cd rom for ibm that has an adapter for the thinkpad. unscrewing it reveal the pin which would work for the laptop adapter. but for the ide dvd, how would i check to see if the power match the adapter.
