Thread: Full size HDD...reliability concerns?

5.25" is the size of standard desktop optical drives, i think you mean 3.5"...

i had an old 40G/7200RPM maxtor drive for more than 2 years, and there were no problem with it - only overheating, but i solved it with better positioning. works in -20 and +40 celsius too, and much faster than 2.5-1.8" drives. now i swapped it to a 120G/7200 samsung one, but the 40G works well in other desktop config...

i've had absolutely no problem with a maxtor 80gb 3.5" for 1+ year.....and its mounted flat

What was I thinking? Good to hear about the reliability...

im reading up on this as well as will be using a spare 320gb that i had lying about.
was reading the info on top of it and the warrenty is void if it execcds 350G so i think it will be safe in my boot

3 years and counting on my drive mounted solid and flat, not even a stutter from it. I have long since thought but could be wrong that most of the problems cause by 3.5 drives are people using old junk drives that were probably about to quit anyway.

dont think ill be bothered about the HD if i did that, to be honest id be worring about the wings and halo id sprouted

Well, depending on if the drive was mounted vertically or horizontally, then you have to take into account the direction vector and how the angle of the force on the read heads would be affected by the plasticity of the arms...
