Windows install help, hardware issues also!

OK, i restored my PC and had major issues with the serial ports, they would work on and on.... Then one day, 4 USB ports stopped working. So I figured something was wrong. I then did a restore again today and when I navigate through Window screens, I get errors all over the place, especially when going into device manager.

What would cause all these issues. It seems the more I reinstall Windows, The more it gets screwed up. The disk I am using is a Windows XP upgrade disk. In the past it would always ask me to install the previous Windows disk to make sure I am upgrading, but now it no longer does that. I am using a legal key, and once again, a upgrade disk. I was think of burning a new Windows CD but the full version. Will my key work with the full version disc? I know that if the key is retail, it can only be used with a retail Disc, and if its a OEM disk, only a OEM key will work. I am not sure though if the keys are diffrent for retail full disk and retail upgrade disk. I also notice that all of a sudden the second partition on the disk says only 1 file is on it, but I put over 10,000 songs. Could I have some kind of virus, and wouldnt reinstalling windows wipe it out? Any help would be appreciated!

i would say if its no longer asking for a key i would say your installing operating systems on top of each other thous casing all the problems have a look at C;\ aand see if you have more than 1 windows folder ie windowsold ect

    Just a few things..

In my past experience I've never had a lot of success with system restore. The restore points seem to never be stable but that's just me. As far as windows xp goes.. if you have 2 different cd's then you'll probably need 2 different keys.

Another recommendation when installing xp or any os would be to do a fresh install instead of upgrading. A fresh format and install works wonders although it may take a little more time its well worth it. Re-installing windows would only wipe out that second partition if you chose to delete it in the options menu.

Lastly if I were you I would like into finding an imaging program. I currently use Symantec Ghost and its about the best thing ever. I have 2 partitions created -- one for my windows install and programs and the other for my media. I was running into the issue of re-installing windows multiple times for many different reasons and it was just time consuming. I get everything installed and how I want it then I just create an image from there which only takes 15 mins. The restore time is about the same and you don't have to worry about drivers and re-installing all of your programs and all that good stuff.

Im sorry, i meant clean installs...... not system restore, I agree, they never work. Here is the thing, I have done full clean installs, or at least I thought I was. I have done a full NTSF format everytime. I thought this wipes out the previous install 100%?

In the beginnning, when it says which partition, delete everything there, "D" I think. It will complain "there is a windows installation on it" or something and "everything will go bye bye" so you have to push "L" maybe" Then enter to confirm, and then you are back at the harddrive selection screen and there should only be 1 thing saying Drive XXX Gb Unformatted or Unpartitioned or something similar. Then do a full format.

    THen install.

Oh ok you are booting to cd and installing and not installing from windows are you?

Also did you update your chipset drivers? I've seen some weird things with usb devices not working so I would at least see about uninstalling and installing the usb root hub's and devices from the device manager.

I decided to plug the HDD into my desktop pc and I got a bunch of errors, I wiped out the partition and made a new one. The second partition said it was bad, so I wiped it out too. I then restarted and my second partiton poped up and seems to work, really weird. I scanned with virius scan and it found one. so now I just have to reinstall Windows and pray.

I have a somewhat retarded question. When you first did your installs, did you guys do it on a workbench in your house or from the car? I noticed that when i did the first installation of Windows, from the house, everything seemed to be OK. The last to reinstalls though were done from the car and were so screwed up. The issue i have is that with the final installation of the PC, it is no longer removable, it is 99.9% built into my car. If anything, I may just take an extension cord and run it to my car and use a Desktop PSU.

Usually whenever I have to re-install I pull my pc out and put it on my workbench with a desktop psu. I'm not sure what all you have with your setup but I really just pull out the mobo and hard drive and leave all of the peripherals inside. I've just about completely discarded a cd rom drive and usually use this method to install windows. (http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/oper...loppyless.html) I have managed to keep all of my install programs on one folder on my second partition which makes life a lot easier since you don't have to go searching for a million cd's and drivers and what not. (rr install, lsx, winamp, gps drivers, etc.) It's just more time consuming for me to try to get my settings correct when I'm looking at the little touchscreen.

Even all of that is time consuming but I can thank the good folks at symantec because ghost has saved me plenty of time. What hardware are you working with? Sorry I'm too lazy to look at your profile.

No need to buy ghost, just boot up a live linux distro and "dd" it. Or even the dd-win32 app.

But if your install is screwed up because you are doing it in the car, you have an underlying issue. Hardware working correctly doesnt care if you are in a car, in a truck, a boat, a plane, or on a laptop riding a camel across the sahara. With working hardware all OS install outcomes will be 100% equal starting from a fresh formatted drive.

If you are getting weird results in the car, somethings up.

And to answer your question, I made a quick terminal connector from parts gathered on mouser, so all I do is unscrew a cap, pull and out it comes. I plan to reformat this coming January as I like to do it once a year because the car does screw up the HD on bouncing over a period of a year. Do a full format and windows will ignore the bad areas saving you from a "crash" when a system critical chunk developes an error.

And of course keep media/drivers on 1 partition, OS on the other. Programs and OS together if using windows since the registry is the glue that holds them together so even if you save the program folder, you will have some major registry work to do. Usually easier to just reinstall the programs. When I was testing a bunch of stuff out, I can get a compete system turnaround of under 2 hours from yanking the pc to putting it back in and installing from the CD. When I just dd it back on, maybe 30 minutes including doing tedious driver installs in the car for the things I dont remove (sirius, gps, touchscreen)
