carputer cut off after about 45 min.???

    Here's the setup:

    EPIA-M 9000
Casetronics DC-DC board and external adaptor
    Travelstar 40Gb HD
    Pioneer slot load DVD
300W inverter wired from distribution block supplied from 4g wire

I've had the system run with out a problem for a few weeks now for more than an hour at a time. It used to get pretty warm in the case but nothing crazy. I did notice if I ran the carputer for a legth of time and then tried to use the DVD it would blank out when the DVD spun up. Also, I noticed, as well as my finger tip , the southbridge chip got VERY hot even though I put an after market heatsink on. I added a few ventilation slits in the top of the case and an extra fan (40mm) blowing directly on the southbridge heatsink. Today I was on my usual journey to Orlando (about 1 hour away) the temp was around 60 Deg. F, and about half way there the carputer cut out. I felt the case for heat and it was the coolest I'd ever felt it for that much time being used. I turned everything off and waited about 15 min. and everything booted up as normal.

I've checked all connections and they're all good. Everything is grounded like it should be. I inverter did not fault. No fuses were blown. I don't think the car had any sudden voltage drops below 11V otherwise the inverter would have faulted...

    Any ideas would be helpfull.

it still still sounds like heat. first make sure all your heatsinks have good tight connections. Then make sure you have good airflow. I'd use two fans. One pushing air in the other pulling it out. here is what I'd do.. place the one pulling the air out right around your CPU and the one pushing it in at the other end. Good air flow is key. modern cpus are made to shut off if they get to hott so they don't damage the cache.

Why are you using an inverter and the external adapter? Why not just wire directly into the board? I ask because I'm giving this psu serious consideration for my setup.

Someone else posted similar complaints and they found that it was heat related... that chipset seems to be a bit less than Ideal for in-car use

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation

I don't feel like making a 12V. regulator, I already had the inverter and the other port on the inverter will have fans hooked up to cool the amps in the trunk.

A lot of people don't like inverters but I've never had problems with mine.

Does the DVD work normally at boot-up (without the PC getting hot first?)

    Two things Defiler.

Perhaps the PSU suffered damage from the heat.

How about you get the CPU HS/FAN you removed for the copper one and put some thermal tape on it for your southbridge.

I know you said you added a fan, but maybe something more direct will be better.

One other thing I noticed was that the sound chip (Trying to remember) got hot as a mother and maybe that's a problem after prolonged higher audio output.

Get the extra copper sink that came with the vantec kit, cut it and stick it to the hot audio chip.

But, I still think the PSU may have suffered.

    Just my thoughts...

All this is a VERY good possibility...I didn't touch the audio chip to test the heat but I know it's hot regardless...I too think it may be the PSU board as well, but on the other hand I don't think the armrest gets hot enought to do any damage...

I'll be doing some testing this weekend to try and figure it out.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!!!
