Screen with buttons instead of Touch screen

    Hi all,
Ive been fiddling with some UI concepts on paper lately, and realised when looking at my sketches that there is rarely more than 4 or 5 things to "click" at once.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to use a normal screen with buttons around the side (like cash/ATM machines) instead of a touch screen? you would save, what, $300? and the impact on UI quality is quite small.

The only question is, whats the best interface for the said buttons. Hacked up keyboard? Parallel port circuit? Im hoping someone has some suggestions for this.

I think a hacked up USB keyboard circut, that way it would be easy to build and you wouldnt need any special drivers for it. And if you get a USB one, then you can still use another usb one, or a ps2 one for a regular keyboard for matinence.

There are a bunch of products with programmable buttons... joysticks mainly.. I'll bet you could get a great deal on an old joystick, and just rip out the 4 or 5 programable buttons in there...

There are also these numeric keypads that I know frys sells that each button can be programmed,

I agree that in most situations one really doesnt have to be hitting more then a few buttongs... plus, the problem with those touchscreens is whenever you use it, you get nasty finger prints all over you $500 + screen.

Hmmm. wish there was a forum completely devoted to input devices... Im sure some folks have some awesome custom solutions driving stick, Im finding my only option may be like 3 programmed buttons and voice...

Hmm. Can you add one of those numeric keypads along with a normal keyboard, and they coexist peacefully?

If so, hacking one of those up should be easy... Just remove the existing switch and solder your own onto the tracks?
