Ok so far I know stand by shuts down only a few componets in a pc. Hibernate saves data to disk and then shuts down the pc and when restarted it picks up from where it left off.
my question, is hibernate the same as s3?
how do i enable it ( S3)..i turned it on my motherboard.
when i hit the power button, it goes into hibernate mode. is this the same or is s3 a different state of being..lol..
S3 is a standby mode.
S4 is hibernation.
so what happens when I enter s3 mode?Quote:

to switch between S2 and S3, go to bios setup - but on some board, for example D201xxx there is no support for S3... :(
to switch between standby S2-3 and hib S4, go to control panel > power options > advanced tab > choose one from "when i press the power button on my computer" combo box. if there is no hibernation option, check the hibernation tab if it is enabled (check if there is enough freespace on C: = size of ram). if there is no hibernation tab, check if all mobo and vga driver are installed...
Thanks. My MB bios has s1 and s3. For some reason, standby does not work. It keeps telling me that a device is preventing (hid, keyboard) the computer from standing by.Quote:

S1 is cpu halted, cpu context/register/cache maintained
S2 ...
S3 is suspend to ram: cpu halted, cpu registers/contexts saved to ram
