I had a 2 year old Western Digital desktop drive in my old system which was in a stiff suspention car with no problems.

My current setup has a IBM travelstar 40Gig. laptop drive. Also, no issues.

some people hate maxtor some people hate IBM

My top choice is Western Digital, right after that IBM

I have never had a Maxtor that didn't die on me, and all my IBM drives are working to this day, although some claim the opposite...

After having 2 of 7 die, one arrive faulty, and one thats marginal, damn skippy im going to claim the opposite And these were in desktops on solid ground, I can only think of what horrors would have befallen the 75gxps had they been in my car. I've never tried them in my car, but seagates now adays are scaryquiet, ive got a 5400 60gb WD thats starting to get bad sectors after having been in my car for over a year. I heard that the fluid drive maxtors are a bit iffy, but otherwise, anything but ibm

Looking to my broken HD shelf, I have:
    20Gb Fujitsu
    10Gb Fujitsu
    40Gb Seagate
40Gb Western Digital (3 months old!)
    15Gb Maxtor

I've also got another Seagate the same as the first on it's way out too.

    I'd buy from experience:

    2.5" IBM's
3.5" Western Digital (the PSU blew it up )
SCSI Quantum (well used too) or Seagate's
