Solid State Drives are coming down...
Lookin around on the internet and checked out a few sites and noticed that you can pick up some of the SSD's for like $100 now. I am thinking about switching my CF system to a SSD but have a few questions first...
So my question is weather to get a SLC or a MLC...
I know that the SLC are much more reliable but the MLC's have a MUCH faster read speed and are much larger for the same $$$. The two drives that I am looking at for ~$100 are:
Transcend TS8GSSD25S-S 2.5" 8GB SATA
# Sequential Access - Read: up to 30MB/s
# Sequential Access - Write: up to 22MB/s
OCZ Core Series V2 OCZSSD2-2C30G 2.5" 30GB SATA II & Mini USB 2.0
# Sequential Access - Read: Up to 170 MB/s
# Sequential Access - Write: Up to 98 MB/s
The nice thing about the OCZ is that it has a USB port so that changing things on it will not require me to get special adapters to hook it to my laptop. The Transcend is a SLC and is SATA where the OCZ is a MLC and SATAII. Also notice that the OCZ is a 30GB vs the Transcend 8GB. But the kicker is that the Transcend has a 30MB read and the OCZ has a 170MB read.My OS is on a 4GB CF now so size is not an issue, and like I said before I will be using EWF.
I can't keep up with all the new hardware for computers and I would like your guy's help deciding to go with the SLC or the MLC drive.

Um, I think you have it the other way around. SLC is faster than MLC. The problem with the cheaper SSDs right now is that when you multitask, it can get really laggy and the system becomes unresponsive. Personally I think I will wait a few more years.
It makes more sense that the SLC is "faster" because there is only one bit per cell so once it determines the cell then it knows, instead of having to decide which bit to choose from the two or four that are in that cell.
Maybe the numbers that are in the post above are transfer rates not seek times. It would seem that the seek time for a SLC would be MUCH faster then a MLC.
Places I've read do mention that the is a problem with multitasking but once a CarPC is up there really isn't that much that goes on... Plus EWF should help this because the disk will primarily be reading not reading and writing at the same time? Just my $0.02 That is why I wanted to ask your guy's opinion.
I do agree that the technology will be much better in a few years, but right now I'm tired of spending $50-60 on CF cards, and crashing hard drives. The roads here in AZ are not that great so a regular hard drive wouldn't last. Actually the first hard drive that I had on my PC only lasted 3 days before a speed bump crashed it.

So now the question is how fast is it?
(10 outta 10) = I wanna buy another just for the hell of it cuz i love how fast this one is!!!!
(7 outta 10) = Its a little faster then a regular HDD and the solid state is a nice feature too.
(5 outta 10) = Its just as fast as my old HDD... wish I went with a different SSD.
(3 outta 10) = Its just okay, don't know if it was worth the switch.
Time to decide... How much better is the SSD over your old hard drive?

I have a samsung SSD.
Ripping a CD was 2 minutes rather than 19 on HDD while playing the CD. But to me it was jsut as much a reability issue as CoryF says.
Sure, waiting a few years will always get you a better product for less money.
Or a few months even. I paid 800USD half a year ago for 64GB. Today it is less than half that. When to buy?... Eternal question.

When I had my MLC SSD drive it was horrible at write speeds, and as Nobb already mentioned it often becomes unresponsive and slow. I setup EWF on it and there was a major boost in speed, especially at boot up. So if you plan to keep using EWF the MLC drive is okay then.
SLC drives are generally faster than MLC. The newer generation MLC drives may show faster throughput speeds than the older SLC drives but that's only part of the picture. The MLC speeds drop really fast when there's many small writes.

That is the one I was looking at on newegg but the one thing to remember is that those numbers are with SATAII.
Anyone have a SLC that wants to chime in?
9 seconds is pretty fast!
