Need help on planning my carputer.

I'm in the process of planning my first carputer setup. I start off by telling you what I have. I have a 600mhz 384mb PIII Dell with a 20gb hard drive and a decent pioneer in dash receiver. I want to put the computer into my car for winamp and watching movies. With my setup I want to be able to use a touchscreen to control the winamp. The things I want to know about are the wiring and power. First off with the wiring, Im gonna put a Soundblaster Live card in my comp. How do I connect that to my receiver? And second with the lcd's that digitalww was selling, where do I connect that, through usb? For the power questions, Will the desktop computer drain my battery? Should I get a secondary battery and put it in the trunk? I know I need to get a dc to dc adapter to up the wattage right? What kind of shutoff, turn on controller can I get for my computer?

I know its alot of questions and I appreciate you responding.

    Thanks

Re: Need help on planning my carputer.

    Wow, where to Start:
    Questions edited for Clarity

1)How do I connect the Sound card to my receiver?
Aux in on the Head unit or FM modulator.

2)Where do I connect the lcd?
Video signal from the Computer to the LCD depends on the signal needs of the LCD. I recomend a VGA input LCD that means a cable from the PC to the LCD just like a regular PC.

3)Will the desktop computer drain my battery?
Only if you leave it on with the car off.

4)Should I get a secondary battery and put it in the trunk?
    No

5)I know I need to get a dc to dc adapter to up the wattage right?
No, DC to DC converters do not "UP" the Wattage. You would use a DC to DC Power Supply instead of the PS in the PC now.

6)What kind of shutoff, turn on controller can I get for my computer?
    Several shutdown controllers are available.

If you have questions about any of this try the search feature on a topic: Shutdown control or second battery.

    Good luck

Alright thanks! And no I dont like the Islanders! Haha. Im a Rangers fan.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the istallation of the lcd look professional on and old car like mine? I dont think the in dash 7" lcd that digitalww sells will fit where my old tape deck was. Right now, I just have the plastic cut out to make a bigger hole for my current receiver. If I get an lcd I want it to look professional. Should I just take it a car a/v pro?

In that case NO HELP FOR YOU!!!

do you have a photo of your dash we could see to check it out and give you a suggestion or two?

here's a good one for you...
A news reporter is walking down the street and he sees two kids playing hockey when a dog attacks one of them.

Thinking quickly the second kid wedges his stick into the dogs collar and breaks it's neck, saving his friends life.

The news reporter runs over and asks the kids for a couple quotes for a news story and he starts writing "Young Islanders Fan Saves Friends Life"

The kid tells ther reporter "I'm not an Islanders fan though"

The reporter says "Oh sorry, since we're on Long Island I figured you were an Islanders fan." and he scratches out Islanders and writes Mets instead.

The kid interupts again "but I'm not a Mets fan either"

"Well, if you don't like the Mets or the Islanders what team do you follow?" asked the reporter.

"I'm a Rangers fan!" the kid exclaimed

The reporter started walking away as he ripped out the page and started a new one reading "Punk kid kills family pet".

    LET'S GO ISLANDERS!!!

For that system the Opus should be sufficient, plus it resolves many of your other questions

How does everyone get there boot up/ shut down times so low. I have a PIII 600mhz 384mb ram running win xp and it takes about 2min. Is there anyway I can cut the startup time significantly?

    Thanks

how much of that time is spent during post?

is it a clean install of XP or have you been using it for a while? What software is installed?

is your tcp/ip setup for dhcp or is it static IP?

It been installed since xp came out. I guess a year? I should delete all the programs not needed for car operations, I think i have alot. You lost me on the tcp/ip thing. Will deleting programs and reinstalling xp make it boot faster?

    Thanks
