Thread: UMPC, what do you guys think?

I use the Samsung Q1U-V and put XP Tablet edition on it. It works great! It can sometimes take a bit to start up but, since I use it solely for the CarPC, I stripped it of everything except what it absolutely needs to work. The only issues I really ran into was mounting. The power adapter goes into the side and the USB connector can go into the side or the top. I went to www.ProClipUSA.com and bought a device holder for it then made my own mount to attach it to the dash. Ended up great for me. Let me know if you have anyspecific questions about it and I can try to fill you in.

To be honest, I haven't used it for video. Just not something I use while driving. The GPS is perfect. There's no choppiness to it that I've noticed. I do have to say that using Road Runner was a little much at times, since RR needs several programs running in the background. There were a few times, though not very often, when the computer would slow and become sluggish. That was the reason for switching to SD for me. That and the integration of the new Nav system in SD2. Now the only issues I have are with boot times. Using BootVis it was just slightly over 60 seconds. I'm still looking for ways to speed things up a bit. Standby is nice but, I'm having problems having my GPS recognized when returning. The nice thing is, I connect everything through a USB hub and put it in my glove box. Now, I have the one USB wire coming out and plugging into the Samsung. The only other thing to connect is the power when it needs it. I'm getting roughly 2 to 3 hours of use out of a single charge so if I charge it at home, I don't usually need power. I'm thinking of getting a wireless USB hub so I won't even need to have the last wire sticking out. All in all, I could't be happier. You don't get the OEM look of an in dash but, you can take it with you when you leave the car. For me, it's comforting not having to worry about theft. I'll try the video playback and repost letting you know. I'll try different codecs and programs to give you a good idea of how it performs.
