How are you going to power the devices for the 24hrs?

You'll probably want to incorporate a sensor that will start recording when the car gets bumped or hit, otherwise you'll just end up with a dead battery and a ton of boring footage.

It's possible. Ive installed one, and I believe a few others on this site have as well. It would be best to install an auxiliary battery to power it though. My DVR + camera only consumes about 5 watts, which should last over a week on a medium sized deep cycle. Alot of people who use standby will draw roughly the same amount of power. Keep it at around 5 watts or less and you should be fine as long as you regularly drive the car. It can be done for less than $100, just search on eBay.

There are such devices as video registers for 2 or 4 cameras. It activates recording if there is a motion in camera. It writes directly to SD or CF card. It also can send you the pics via gsm on request.
try to find ASV-RF03-GSM in google.

There's a much easier way. Hook a camera to your desktop at home and point the camera at the car. Problem solved.

If you're not at home, what do you need it for? If it's for people stealing the car, then they steal the computer too. If it's for people messing with the outside of the car, you'll need about 5 cameras to get all the angles and good luck mounting them. Your car would end up looking like the Google Maps car.

if someone steals the car won't they also steal the footage of themselves stealing the car (whether it be on CF, DVD or HDD)? Rendering the whole thing, er, pointless?

here, the place i live, there aren't more car thefts than there are car audio system thefts. n mostly i wanted a security system as many people keep fiddling with the car, scratch the cars, rip off the side beading. so i wanted some system to record all of those scenes. so i wanted an economical security system which can run 24hrs n still not kill my car battery.
