well, been doing a lot more looking, and it looks like I'm gonna have to either go with a PCI based card on a nano-itx board, or try to squeeze in a mini-itx board.
Has anyone seen a Sub-Mini-ITX (nano or pico itx) that has a PCMCIA port? It seems odd that the larger boards offer this smaller expansion format, but the smaller boards I've seen do not. I'm looking to use my Audigy 2 NX PCMCIA sound card (mostly because I want to use kx project drivers), but would like to use something smaller than a mini-itx.

DOH.. guess I'm answering a lot of my own concerns hre.. it seems there aren't even any nano-itx boards with PCI slots. just some minipci. so damn frustrating! hehe
Guess it's time to measure for the mini-itx job.. at least going mini will save me a lot of cash.

You could see if you can find a EBC or similar 3.5" formfactor board with PC/104+ connection, and then get a PC/104+ to Cardbus adapter. Likely not cheap, but looks to be in your size range.
did some refiguring, and it looks like I'm gonna be able to make mini-itx work (diferent location than i had hoped... but the cost difference will outweigh that.) i was just surprised that the offering wasn't there.
