i just thought of something if you want to rule out software from hardware try using a live environment, if it fails in the live environment then it hardware if it doesn't the it's software.

    here's some instructions:
    http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=359

or if you're familiar with Linux you can download a prebuilt one. (MODs it's free under GPL licence, i don't want another hit for warez)

Thanks for the help everyone! I will try these suggestions and report back tomorrow. I really hope its not the motherboard. Not because I'm out of my warranty period, but because I'm a total idiot and redoing everything would make me want to jump off a bridge!

Injector: Are you telling me to (a) create this disk on a different computer, then boot with the problem drive or (b) attempt to create the disk using the faulty drive on the working computer (my desktop which it always works with).

    * Clear out all corresponding keys
Can you explain how to "clear out all corresponding keys"? There is a multitude of subfolders under that path.

**Also, I don't know if this helps or not (think it will):

The cd/dvd drive shows up as a folder with this path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\E num\USBSTOR\CdRom&Ven_TEAC&Prod_DW-224SL-R&Rev_1.08

that folder had 6 subfolders. all 6 have subfolders "device parameters" and "logconf" but the first subfolder of the above TEAC folder also has "control" too.

Is my computer thinking the cd drive is a mass storage device? should it be?

    First try this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314060

    And if it does not solve your problem then;
Export your registry to a file, remove the subfolders in the following registry keys. If all else files you can double click on the registry file to add the items back in.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\U SB
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\U SB Printers
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\U SB Storage
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

just be careful you don't remote the upper Enum folder, i did it after being fed up with bad drivers but i made a backup of the removed keys thinking i would just be able to restore them if anything went wrong, man was i wrong it removed all my drivers including mouse and keyboard which left me with literally no control of the pc, i had to boot in my Linux partition to fix the registry.

ok, I tried the suggestions by both Injector and almera. Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately, the problem is not fixed, but I believe we have made some progress.

The dvd drive now shows up as a dvd drive. thank god!

BUT, it won't read anything. Here is what it does:
    - after doing this and rebooting, it showed up AND read a data disk.
    - then it would not read a different disk I put in it, none after the 1st (including trying the first disk again
    - it still spins up every disk I insert for like 3-5 seconds, then stops
    - trying to browse the disk shows nothing in the drive.

    Thoughts?

I have the same issue and it resolved itself - I changed the cable from a 3m ti 1m USB - the longer cable would make the drive spin and seek forever with no results.
Have you tried a shorter cable?

did you try in in the live environment?

Injector, in post #12 I asked for clarification on the "live environment" idea because I'm unsure of exactly what you are suggesting that I do.

VYSSO3, the cable is only 12" long and the drive/cable work perfectly on other computers.

Punky and all, is there any way I can test the motherboard to definitively conclude that the motherboard is bad? Since its warrantied, I'd much rather replace the mobo than reformat windows.
