    Soyo - KT333 AMD2000xp+ FSB problems...Help!

Ok here is what I got

I have a Soyo dragon KT333 platimum edition
An AMD 2000+xp Huge *** HSF
    512mb of 2700mhz mushkin RAM
3d prohet II mx (32mb) video card
    350 watt power supply
    dvd
    floppy

here is the problems, so I set the CPU down to 100mhz (it supposed to be at 133)....then I was able to get it working. Got xp on there, updated all drivers and bios. Went back to put it up to 133, and I turn it back on...and nothing, I have to pull the cmos battery out to get it back to defaults to start working again. So what I'm asking is how do I make this this work and go at 133 like it's supposed to?
Anyone with expeience, please give this retarded person good instructions, just you were teaching a 4th grader!!

    Thanks
    for any help!!!

You post that you have to pull the battery for the cmos so it goes back to DEFAULTS? does not compute, default as in 100MHz? I thought your defaults were 133MHz?

Anyway what else did you mess around with your BIOS? did you not touch the ram speed? Also where does it lock up? Do you even see a splash screen?

As you posted seems to me that you are having problem with your BIOS, if thats case you can be out of luck. If you dont properly update the bios or "flash it" you can actually cause damage, BUT thats NOT what we want.

What exactly happens when you try to start up? Where does it lock up?

NOPE...The defaults are 100fsb, If I go and set it to 133fsb to , but i don't touch the ram speed...get the full use out of my cpu, I save it and it looks as if it's going to start up....but all I get is blackness...nothing....I have to reset the bios by pulling the jumper or the battery...
The bios were successfull, I was having the same problems before, that's why I updated them, but to know avail...

When I have it running at a 100fsb it works....but it's only running at 1250mhz then....that seems like a waiste to me....

    thanks for responding!!!

Im not familiar with the board, so these and specifics, but general questions are, is the board completely jumperfree? ie there's not a jumper somewhere thats picks 100/133/166 for the front side bus? And is the multiplier correct even though the fsb is off? And do you have the newest bios?

it just has a cmos reset jumper...
everything else is in the bios...I did get the newest bios because of this problem, and still after getting them I' still having the same prob....I do have the newest bios
everything else is just default...I don't want to fry anything....

I got the motherboard from a guy on hardforum....now I'm not sure how long he had it, or where he got it from....I have contacted people who have had similar problems with this same board, and they have RMA'd it, since I bought it from someone else I'm not sure if I can go about doing this. I think board is just a pile of crap and so if I get a new one....what shoud I get?

If its for a desktop environtment get a Asus hands down.

And I think your mobo just shot the **** on you, sorry to tell you this, but I may be wrong, try to take it to a local computer shop to see if they can check it out for you.

Well first of all I think that board is a really good motherboard. A little on the expensive side but a great all around motherboard with a lot of features...so don't chuck it just yet. Also I think you should be able to RMA it with no problems. In my experiance RMAing things manufacturers don't really ask for proof of purchase...all they are looking for is a serial number.

Now for trying to fix this without RMAing. First thing I would do is maybe play with some of the memory timing settings in the BIOS. I know you said you have Mushkin memory...which is pretty good but it could be a bad piece that is having trouble at the higher bus speed. Try setting the latency's to higher numbers. Next thing I would do is maybe try another stick of memory. Also I know this board allows you to change the FSB in increments. Try increasing the speed one or two MHz at a time to see exactly where it starts failing. Also...and this is a stretch but try increasing the voltage on the AGP bus...you have an older video card that might not like the slightly higer clocked AGP bus which the board will set at 133.

    Anyway...good luck.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!!!!
    I'll try them tonight...
I purchased a cheaper PSU too with the case, so I'm going to try a different one too!

An underpowered system could cause general problems (which is why AMD recomends mamoth PSU's now adays), PC2700 should have 0 problems running at PC2100 speeds, and Soyo shouldn't have any problem taking it back. Just don't be all "Its not mine."
