    thanks guys for the feedback.

after two car pc installs (laptop than a little valley) i was after my third but decided to go another route. 2009 car pc is still in its childhood - mainly because of
    - 12 dc with cranking / lack of pc (laptop) battery to compensate
    - boot times are too long - i want it instant
    - software (gps etc.) not up-to-date and integration of all parts still tricky
    - touchscreen still of bad quality or too expensive

i will go the ipod/zune/archos table pc way. archos 5 internet tablet with android os is my favourite at the moment.

guys sort of on topic of overkill; i was thinking of going with a core 2 duo for the simple reason of boot up time. I've seen some examples of the centrafuse taking 30-45 seconds to boot, and figured the cause was the atom. Is this the case, or am I missing something?

Buffalo doesn't get really hot and I would think a core 2 duo on a mini-itx shouldn't overheat in the trunk with the rear seat bypass open???

It's not the atom. CF takes a long time to start on any machine. It probably tries to solve world hunger every time it starts and gives up after the last plugin has loaded and the last png has been texture-ized.

An atom based system can boot very fast, the ION especially. It all depends on your choice of software. Having an SSD hard drive helps a lot too.

I am using a Acer Aspire Revo Nettop as the center of my carpc. Atom + ION.
    Works great.

Saw one of those at bbuy. Looked really appealing for both the car and as a set top box. Glad it's working well for you.

my original plan was to put it in the car, but I have been enjoying it too much in attached to the TV, so it never made it back to the car. I am thinking I will have to pick up an extra one. For only $200 its not bad at all...USB ports abound.
