should be able to knock one up with wither some alloy tube or even some strips of rubber held tight to add some vibration protection

I agree that fabricating something for the HDDs is relatively easy.
However, any "vibration protection" is not something I'd recommend.
Mount your HDDs securely to your enclosure or to the chassis of the vehicle. Let the vehicle's suspension do its thing.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

hmm, fair enough mate, what makes you say this though, i would have thought that 1) the suspension doesnt take you the small jolts that the hdd might suffer from, and 2) that extra protection wouldn't hurt?

    Search the forums.
This is a subject that has been discussed, debated, argued, and mulled over repeatedly, with people knowledgable in the field weighing in.
the general consensus is that vibration dampening for the HDD is more likely to keep the HDD vibrating and is actually more likely to cause damage.

One user has had the same HDD survive two (three?) accidents, one of which totalled the car. The HDD still runs like a champ, and was never mounted to any vibration dampeners in any of the installs.

That would be me.... one of the wrecks bent a partially boxed full ladder truck frame. The computer parts are far more durable than you or the car.

Make one from scratch, parts from an old PC case or find what you are looking for and buy it?

I used a drive cage from an old desktop case. It was made to slide out, have hard drives attached then slide back into the case.

This made it easy to remove from the donor case and it already fit the drives. It currently holds my DC to DC PS and one HD.

Big question though is where they full sized hard drives or shock protected laptop drives? Laptop drives are much better at taking large shocks.

There are plenty of commercial harddrive enclosures...your best bet for mixed drives would be a dual slot 3.5" enclosure and then a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket for the second drive. Depending on your needs they should be only a few bucks on ebay.

As far as vibration protection something like a rubber washer is about as much as you want to do...as was hinted at above strips of rubber can actually increase vibration (hence the reason cars have shocks and springs not just springs).
