    What kind of relay should I use?

    Hi,
    I want to use a relay to put my cars ignition in the on position when my car alarm sends the the unlock pulse to unlock the doors and back off when the alarm sends the lock pulse. I googled "relay" and figured that i'm suppose to use a latching relay but i don't know where to begin.

    My goal is create an rfid security system like on luxury cars where they have a push to start button without need to put in the key.

    Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    You can wire this up with a $15 S2000 style Ignite button from Ebay. It should come with the relay.

    A relay is the least of your issues, if that's what you're trying to achieve. A true "keyless" start system is way more integrated in the car. Think about it, when you put your key in the ignition, and turn it...it's not just the electrical side of things that come on, the steering wheel physically "unlocks", so that it can be turned now, among other things. A relay is not gonna help you unlock something physical.

    I know, i was going to modify/break the steering wheel lock so that won't be a problem... Right now the only hindrance to my plan is the type of relay.

    Or possibly just leave the a key in there just to keep the steering unlocked, since the alarm/relay alarm combo will be controlling if the ignition is on or off. Or i could get an ignition cylinder from a junk yard and modify the steering lock. Or i could have the alarm activate a small solenoid to disable the steering lock... There's several possibilities I've considered.

    Are you for real? Every suggestion in your post is highly illegal and if your car gets stolen (which would now be quite easy), your insurance company won't pay you anything. The only way I would do this is if my car was a $200 junker that I left in my driveway unlocked.

    That could actually be a theft deterrent if done properly, but sure, insurance won't pay if they can find any possible way. Most thieves go straight for the key, pop it and drive off. The wheel/transmission lock keeps thieves from pushing the car, but does nothing for towing, and it's in the same place on every car and about as weak as a lock on a sliding glass door. So having a non-functioning key is an excellent distraction, although I'd prefer completely removing it (possibly replacing it with a solenoid and welding a steel plate over it) and do some bondo work to make it smooth there, or maybe even carbon fiber the whole column case. You'll also have to bypass VATS or whatever other security the car has, plus you'll need inhibiters as your own form of security. Where those are and how they work shouldn't be made public but should definitely be used.

    But anyway, you'll need a lot more than a relay to do it.

    Yeah im for real! illegal? Strange, since it's my car, i thought i could do what i want with it. It's not like i'm tampering with any safety features. Well, Anyways my car has shaved door handles and an (alarm which i plan on upgrading to an even better one)... There are a lot of easier cars to steal. If someone actually had the guts and ability to figure out how i modded the security and try to steal it, I'll also have a hidden a gps tracker on it (there are a lot of options ie: mologo.com). They would be in BIG trouble when i find them. If somehow the guy happens to be a lucky leprechaun made of lucky horse shoes and rabbits feet who gets away with it, first i would salute them, and then move on. Yeah the car has minimum insurance and is a 98 honda and, yes, is kinda beat up. I wouldn't do this on a new car that is in good shape. This is pretty much a hobby project.

    I've been wanting to do this project since they came out with rfid alarm systems so i have thought a lot about it and concluded that it is feasible to do for relatively cheap.

    Anyways, Im not really great at electrical so if anybody could answer my original question (what kind of latch relay to use) That would be awesome. Once i finish planning out this project i'll prob start a new thread documenting my progress.

    Oh yeah those are good ideas. I may use them... So far the car already standard aftermarket ignition immobilizer installed w/ alarm and i believe that's the only security. I doubt anybody would want to try to steal a honda that has a bunch of rigged stuff done to it over any one of the millions of stock hondas on the road. Right?
