    1st Project.....

    Hi All..

I am new to the mp3 car scene and site!!! I Gotta have one has struck and im in planning for my very first car mp3 player..

I have an old 166mhz pc.. From what i have seen around ,I would like to go with the DOS,mpxplay,16x2lcd, and a numeric keypad.

Is there some software available to run the above?

I am not the best at modding files and programming..
But i will have a go..

U already mentioned it... DOS is the OS, and MPXPLAY is the software player... that`s all u need (software wise)!

btw, i`m currently running a very similar setup in my car, (mpxplay running on p75 ,two 16x2lcd's, and a numeric keypad), I should be able to help if you get stuck.

I am running a p120 with win98 Winamp, GPS, Delorme street atlas.

With a p166 you can do whatever you want, but you won't be able to display eye candy well.

The nice thing about slower processors, is that they draw less power and produce less heat.

Thanks For the Reply.. Much Appreciated

The software i am unsure about for dos is for running a display on the 16x2 lcd screen..(when i say lcd i mean the 2 line character displays not an lcd monitor)

Also you think with a 166 i should be able to run windows 98 and winamp? Do you have to have a monitor? Or can it run solely from the lcd...

If no monitor, how do you setup 98 so it loads winamp (or whatever program you may think best) at startup...

Or on the lcd you choose the file and push play wich will open winamp automatic?

Please Excuse my ignorance (ignorance=lack of Knowledge)
and thanks for the help it is very appreciated..

I only chose dos, mpxplay because of issues with shutting down win 98 causing corruptions.. But if i can turn off the scandisk it should be ok.. I am now very interested in the win 98 idea..

Also thanks Mike Hunt I will take you up with a lil help as the project goes on thanks again..

I did this same thing a long time ago, but it was for a home stero mod type thing. I installed win98 lite, and had an external either 20x4 or 16x2 (i dont remember) LCD screen from crystalfontz. The only reason you would need a monitor is if you needed to debug a problem. You just have it set up so it boots up into windows and starts winamp, and you can get plugins to make one of those PS/2 numberpads for laptops be the control.

If no monitor, how do you setup 98 so it loads winamp (or whatever program you may think best) at startup...
just create a shortcut to winamp and put it in the startup folder.

here are some old links i found in my bookmarks, there for using low end computers as an mp3 player...i cant guarentee they all work tho .

    and finally, a winamp plugin

This was a cool page with a fair bit of info.. Thanks for the link..

On this page there is software called winlcd. that says it is sweet with a 16x2 lcd.

This link also has a good program called lcd center 2.0 wich seems to carry the 16x2 lcd as well as other info from your pc or your input..(good for other things other than winamp)

Thanks a bunch, I am going to run winamp ,win98 and a 16x2 character LCD..WOOHOO Im stoked.....Thanks Again..
