    External Hard Drive Auto-On Solution?

I currently use an external 500gig hard drive for all of my audio/video files, as my laptop holds a measly 120gigs. At the moment, I need to reach behind my seat and flip the switch for the external hard drive each time I start the car. It is connected to the laptop through USB (obviously).

Do you know of any solutions where the hard drive will power on automatically? Whether it is running a wire with a toggle on/off switch (like what you would do for a laptop on/off), or using some sort of software to automatically turn it on/off?

When you flip the switch, where is it getting power from? USB?

If so, you can put a relay in line with the power switch that turns it on when you start the car and will turn it off when you shut the car off.

Do you use an automotive DC-DC PSU? You could power it from that as well.

    Ahh bug, Always helpful

I should have been more clear though. The HDD is not USB powered, but 5V I believe (this is off hand, I'm not in front of it at the moment), so I have it powered from a distro block in my vehicle. I do use a carnetix p2140, although I believe I currently just use the 5v output from that, and it is used to power my 8 port USB hub.

Lessee if I'm getting this right: the 2140 outputs 5V and that goes to the HDD and an 8 port hub? If so, why doesn't that power up your USB drive?

If that's not how it works, consider doing it that way!

You know, I don't know why I didn't think about doing it that way.

It's been some time since I've put it all together in my car, but I know that the main line on the Carnetix was faulty (The one which generally powers the laptop), but I'm pretty sure the other two were working fine.

I'm taking the car apart to redo the whole thing now that I have a better understanding of it all in the next few weeks, so when I do I'll let you know how this hard drive configuration went. Thanks again Bug, always helpful.
