Thread: Xbox Carputer possible?

OK, first things first,

1)I have already searched the boards and don't see much on this subject.

2)Yes, it is possible to mod your xbox to use a 3rd party OS called EvoX, and it's pretty cool and very functional.

3)Text readability (I'll get to that later)




From what I have seen on TV and the net, It is possible to hack an xbox to use as a PC (well, a computer that has almost the same functionality as a PC). Since an xbox can be hacked to be used as a PC, it should be possible to use a hacked xbox as a carputer.

I don't really have any interest in using my carputer for anything like GPS, just as a media box (ie DVD's, DIVX, and of course MP3's, etc....) Plus being able to play xbox games in my truck is a plus, but not while driving of course!


Evox is a 3rd party OS designed to run on the xbox. There is a very good media player embedded that I think will be really cool to use.

The text readability issue with PC based systems hooked to LCD screens (using TV-Out) is one of the reasons I'm considering using a hacked xbox. Since it already comes with a good quality TV-out built-in. I've seen the Micro$oft media center PC hooked up to a TV at a local electronics store, and the text readability is TERRIBLE. A freind of mine uses his DVD-ROM on his PC as his DVD player, and he says he had to memorize the buttons rather than read them when he's using his TV. But with an xbox, I assume the text readability would be very good, even with an LCD screen, besause of the makeup of the signal. Is my assumption correct?


Also built into the xbox, it comes with all hardware need to get going (execpt the modchip of course). With a 733MHz Intel chip (some will say it's a pIII, and some will say it's a celeron, but it's actually a PIII derived chip). And of course it comes with all the RAM, HDD, and connections built in. That's a plus for me since I don't really have all that stuff lying around, and don't really want to go buying stuff everywhere.

So I can't run windows, so what! I think this adds up to a good all around option for me. Has anyone else done this before? I figure I'd check this board to see other peoples experiences.
