Volume control between computer and amp?

I'm not an audio expert, but I've been working with computers for a long time. One thing I know is that your audio output from any PC needs to be amplified, if for no other reason than so you can control the volume without using the operating systems controls.

As far as I know this isn't a standard thing for car audio since the HU generally controls the audio levels. Why not? There must be some applications (like a carputer) where you need an intermediate volume control. Something that is in between my carputer and my amp so that I can limit my output.

That way, if for some crazy reason the sound controls on the computer get totally jacked up, I have a knob, somewhere, that I can turn quickly to cut that sound off...or turn it down before playing anything just to be safe.

Does anything like this exist or what? I'm deathly afraid of letting Windows take care of my volume control needs STRAIGHT out to my amplifer and then speakers? ugh!

i think i know exactly what you should need.
i will use links from sonic electronix, but most of this stuff is available from other places as well(and sonic is not a authorized dealer of all the brands they sell...)

you mentioned both a line driver, and a volume control, so, first, i must mention the JL audio cl-rlc. they are kind of pricey at about $50 each, but allow the volume knob to be remotely mounted from the main controller box-- a huge advantage over other units if your 'puter and amps are in the trunk.

and my review of it: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/revi...ed-preamp.html

and now my mouse messed up and it posted...

anyways, there are also line drivers like this sound gate one, but the differnce with this is that the audio cable must be routed through it, so if your puter is under the seat, you would first need to route all of your audio cable to wherever you want the preamp(this a 4 channel version, the other 2 that i listed are 2 channel)...

i know i have also seen some volume control boxes that are very similar to the soundgate module, just wouth out the preamp part...ah, found one:

then, there are also preamp eq's that you might also be able to use for this..

it all depends on your setup, but i still highly recommend the cl-rlc for its remote mountable capability.

those are the primary options.. there are always a couple that i miss, so if you find something else, do think that it is a poor idea...

Hey soundman, I actually found your posting about that product but wasn't entirely sure if that's what I needed. I have a hard time finding a good picture of that thing...I can't really tell where the volume control is and such...I'm going to keep looking!

tusk, not sure if you read my post after i accidently posted, or after i edited it, so i am bumping the thread once more-- there are definatly more options than just the cl-rlc. i know that they are not cheap, compared to other options, and are sometimes not always the best solution in all installs.

Ive been worried too that my computer audio out would be jacked up and Id have to wait for the computer to shutdown, but Ive never had that problem. It's more conveniant to have the computer control the volume, but just in case, you could have an audio cutoff switch.
