NEED HELP on Serial to USB concerns!

I have been shopping for a Quad Core based mini-itx board. My setup is limiting me on what I can get though. First off it has to have a PCI slot (thats no biggy), but the part that kills me is that it also has to have 4 serial ports. I did find one that has the serial ports needed, but it doesn't have a good enough graphics chip on it. My system is based on good quality graphics and being able to push to multiple screens with no hiccups. My old MoBo did this almost flawlessly, but I really want a Quad Core based system.

Now my question is, can I convert my serial devices to USB with no issues. I have 21+ USB devices already, and I am scared adding more will cause issue.

Here are the 4 serial devices I am using:

1.) HD Radio via Mitch's cable.
2.) XM Radio via Mitch's cable.
    3.) OBD Pro ELM Scanner.
    4.) PAC TR4 for AMP_Control.

I know most of the boards I am eying have at least one com port, so I need to know which should stay as a serial device, and which can be used on a USB to serial converter reliably.

    Any help would be appreciated.

As long as you get a high quality serial to usb converter you should have no issues.

We use these at work, we used to get the cheaper ones, but after multiple issues we decided to pay the money and do it right, and haven't had any issues since!

WOW, 4 serial devices on one USB port. Thats actually f*#king awesome. Its also small enough that I can add it to my front center console. Is it as responsive as a com port that is directly conected to a MoBo? I do not like the price, but if I can go with a AMD based board, it will actually break even. Where as a INTEL based board will run me $260.00, a AMD based will be half.

It is as fast if not faster. It's basically 4 usb to serial chips on a internal USB hub, pretty simple design but it's very stable.

To be honest, I'd trust either keyspan or FTDI. You can probably find a FTDI unit for cheaper.

Id rather go for what other users have used and found to work. I have been set back with to many incompatibilities in my setup.

Well I want to say that I didnt want to spend the money on the serial to USB device. I saw that most places had it for $126.00, but even that was alot to me. I decided to compare other companies to this one, and use Ebay to find the different brand names. I was looking through and saw that someone was selling the Keyspan version but at an amazing $35.00!!!!!!!!!!!! I of course bought it, and now waiting to get it! So I guess sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too.

Those used to be really expensive. Well over $100. Maybe they're using the new FT4232H chip which will make them much cheaper.

No they are. They are about $126.00. The guy that was selling it, I dont think knew how much it really was supposed to be. It also could have been a liquidation, thats how I got my KVMP units for $20.00 a piece, when those go for $80.00 a piece normally.
