    I misunderstood kev's command, which is why I brought that up, Kev will be able to say if that's still an issue or not.

    Right. If we are talking LinuxICE, we are talking 2.6.28. The issue with Karmic/9.10 is that you can't actually read from the device. The device otherwise shows up (possibly even without the modprobe magic i wrote earlier). You can get the new kernel in proposed by adding the proposed repo in your updates tab in synaptic (synaptic being the package manager app frontend).

    soo. since linuxICE its a older kernel, does FTDI stuff work right there?
    if so.. i guess all ok
    -Thanks

    I think we may be talking about 2 separate problems. The issue that i care about is the ftdi_sio driver knows nothing about the boombox's pid and thus, doesn't create a tty device for it. A tty device is like a com port in windows, without it, no apps can talk to the device. To get the ftdi_sio to create the tty device, you must do the modeprobe magic. The alternative solution is I patch the ftdi_sio driver in my kernel with the boombox's pid so it'll just work, which I may do because I like things to just work.

    The issue with 9.10 is different. It's a bug in the pre-2.6.31.6 kernels and basically makes every ftdi device not work. ubuntu has a fix, but I believe the above issue is still and issue.

    Anyway, i just wanted to be clear. If we are all on the same page at this point, then all is well. The right thing seems to be patching the ftdi_sio kernel driver and pushing it upstream so all future versions just work.

    While I am personally glad you changed the PID to make it unique, in retrospect, it's a lot of work no?

    WELL.. lot of work? a little.. but its a requirement, the product is unique and professional, therefore it should have its own PID
    as all my products do... sirius...xm...UAS4...Toslink switcher

    I just want to hear you say that it's an intentional self imposed requirement.

    On a side note, you said to google and I could find many products that use their pwn PID. I haven't found any that use the FTDI usb-tty chip besides yours that does this... mind giving a few examples? Purely for curiosities sake. All the ones I've found still use the stock FTDI pid/drivers.

    I had another thought on a nice feature for the library... how about having an idle mode, so when you aren't listening to radio... it will scan around and gather information like station names and HDText while you're doing other stuff (listening to your mp3's, navi, or whatever), but once you go back to the radio it'll switch back to the station you were listening to.

    I'm blanking on the name but isn't one of the features of HD radio that it can get station info from a second station while tuned to the first?? That way you can get traffic or weather info out of the hdtext (or whatever the technical name is). There was also a feature I saw advertised that allowed listening for alerts over the data channel of another station and automatically changing to the other station when a certain event occurs.

    sure just open FTDI_SIO.H file

    hundreds of PIDS in there

    also doing some simple math, blocks of 8 pids starting from FFFF and working backwads to mine assigned is 9378, there are 0d90
    (3,472 diffent (unless a company needed more than 8) people/companies using a custom PID)
    IN REAL life you dont see theproblem, because they all get drivers done for WINDOWS (EASY PROCESS at a $$$ of course), and if its for linux, it would be a custom application
    and they would compile thier own FTDI_SIO drivers, which i dont think is really that hard to do.. but thats what linux people are used to... totally unacceptable in rest of plug in play world
    but it doesnt matter for you, you know how to add the pids in, and KEV000 will patch is FTDI_ISO drivers in linuxICE

    look at req
    http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/41191/
    http://osdir.com/ml/linux-kernel/2009-04/msg14121.html

    and thats a DAMM specific device
    they went and got thier OWN VID too!! (id love to have my own VID)

    here is a sample:
    Code:
     * PCDJ use ftdi based dj-controllers. The following PID is for their DAC-2 device
     * http://www.pcdjhardware.com/DAC2.asp (PID sent by Wouter Paesen)
     * (the VID is the standard ftdi vid (FTDI_VID) */
    #define FTDI_PCDJ_DAC2_PID 0xFA88

    /*
     * The following are the values for the Matrix Orbital LCD displays,
     * which are the FT232BM ( similar to the 8U232AM )
     */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_0_PID      0xFA00  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_1_PID      0xFA01  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_2_PID      0xFA02  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_3_PID      0xFA03  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_4_PID      0xFA04  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_5_PID      0xFA05  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */
    #define FTDI_MTXORB_6_PID      0xFA06  /* Matrix Orbital Product Id */

    /* Interbiometrics USB I/O Board */
    /* Developed for Interbiometrics by Rudolf Gugler */
    #define INTERBIOMETRICS_VID              0x1209
    #define INTERBIOMETRICS_IOBOARD_PID      0x1002
    #define INTERBIOMETRICS_MINI_IOBOARD_PID 0x1006
