    Rev/speed displays....

    Hey all
I had a quick search for this and all i could come up with were some things for the OBD2 system, something that i dont have!

My idea was simple - take the computer that we have in the boot, and connect it up to the car to monitor (not control, i'm suspicious of anything that can control a car other than my feet and hands) the outputs of the speed, tacho, air temps, etc. The possibilitys of this are endless for people like me that strive to be lazier than i currently am!

For example - if you usually go for 300 ks before filling up, the computer could easily take care of this for you and tell you when to go and fill up. For drag racing it couldnt be hard at all to get the 0-100s and quarter mile times.

I'm sure i'm not the only one thats had this idea, has anyone else actually attempted it though?

Well your going to need a cable that connects your ecu/ecm to your computer then you need software. Thats what Ash's setup is like. try searching the internet,or check bmw modding sites.

Ok i knew that i was going to need a cable to link into the ecu and all that, i guess my question was worded a little vaugly

Does anyone know how cars transmit the info to the dash? Is the speedo/tach/etc a frequency/voltage or something completely different?

alright... i assume that every car built as of the last 10-20 years is going to be entirely controlled by the onboard computer. this means that the guages and other equipment is going to be controlled electronicly. so, the engine data (revs, speed, temp, etc) are going to be monitored by electronic sensors, that are fed into the main computer. from there they are most likely transmitted to the gauges... no more cables from the tranny housing to the gauges...etc.

big assumption here.. so i hope im right.

oh my bad i just peeked at it its the code to load on the chip and links for the application notes to hook up a lcd and stuff

oh yeah got another nifty schematic someone else made for a turbo timer / vac/boost gauge and temp and oil and a few other nifty tricks it can do

I think his question is how does the ecu send data to the gagues in the dash...

I believe that it is voltage (unless you have a digital gague, in which case I would assume not).

Mike, i dont know about all cars in the last 20 years, but certainly mine does have the electrics into the instrument cluster, no old speedo cables in sight! Thats exactly what i was talking about.

And they are all normal needle gauges too, so silverjester you think voltage?

And oddcomp i'd love anything that you've got that i could sink my teeth into as far as this is concerned.....
