Metra Dash Kit for 2010 Mustang

Ok so I recently purchased a 2010 Mustang GT Coupe (w/o the shaker or navigation system) and ever since I found this site a couple years ago, I've been dying to build my own carpc!

Then the 2010 Mustangs came along, and out went the old radio set up which allowed for just swapping the double-din unit for some crazy lcd touchscreen sexiness, and in came the new radio layout which insisted that you fabricate your *** off in order to even think about starting a project like a carpc.

But I knew it would only be a matter of time before some aftermarket company came up with a dash kit for this car... and lo and behold.. the Metra (99-5823CH) single/double din install kit for the 2010 Mustang!

Problem is, this thing is so damned new that nobody seems to have any reviews of it aside from the standard "here comes Metra with this new product blah blah blah.." blurbs.

So what I want to know, is have any of you guys seen/used this thing? Or do any of you know anyone who has? For those of you who have experience in the carpc building arena, do you think you would want to work with this product?

My goals for this would be to purchase one of the pre-built LCD double-din inserts from the mp3car store and drop it in this thing, and if possible, to connect the included LCD screen to my carputer and display whatever I want to display on it, not just the outside temperature (imagine RSS feeds scrolling on this bad boy lol)...

So... this dash kit looks like it has a "universal" style set up.. the included side panels seem to be designed to hold any brand of aftermarket double-din head.. do you guys think that's a fair statement? Could I potentially buy any of the LCD dd inserts from the mp3car store and toss it in here?

And as far as the LCD screen goes, does anyone have any ideas on how i would hack the wires up to connect to my carpc (via usb i'm guessing would be the easiest) and what software I would need to power it?

God I'm long winded! For those of you who survive the wall of text above and can answer some of my questions, I thank you in advance. And for those of you who were 'crit' by the wall o' text and have died... I'm sorry =0(

I'm not following you on the car pc part. If you buy an LCD screen, you just plug it into the VGA connector on the car pc. Or, if it's one of those USB monitors, you plug it into the USB port.

No, what I was referring to was the fitment of the unit, not the connection. I'm looking at buying this display

and putting it in the Metra dash kit i referenced in my first post. I'm just wondering if those two parts will fit together. I know the dash kit will fit in my car since it's designed for it, but will the monitor above fit with that dash kit?

From the pictures of the dash kit on the manufacturer's web site, it looks like it's been designed to fit any aftermarket radio head unit (judging by the crazy amount of holes on those mounting brackets), but it doesn't specifically say "will work with the following models: blah blah blah".. so I'm trying to figure out which model of display combo kits that you guys sell will work with that dash kit...

Edit: And the LCD I'm referring to in the second part of my initial post is the one that comes with the dash kit itself. I would imagine that it would have a connector that matches the stock plug from the mustang, but I'd like to hook that up to the computer in the car and have it display things other than the temperature and such..

that screen should fit very close. the dd screen is slightly taller, and narrower(about 2-4mm total) then the overall dd dimensions--in my car, i had to trim a mm or two off the top of my bezel to get the screen to lay flat

Wait. Are you talking about interfacing this LCD screen with the car's native connection to that top Dot matrix display readout shown in the picture? I'm unfamiliar with some of the newer models features, the modified body style turned me off to the newest ones.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but your wording indicates that you want to just modify and control the can-bus stuff from the LCD touch-screen. I know some of the newer models actually have an OEM pc solution, but that's an option that's in the din unit itself.
