Being as I work in the field of fully autonomous robotics, I can tell you that location registration based on camera images (Even if you use stereo cameras) is no small feat. We're talking on the order of you had better have corporate backing and quite a few very talented engineers on the team before even thinking of embarking on such a project.

That being said, I don't see Kinect being even remotely useful for anything of that sort.

And as for pointing it inwards, the force feedback that you get from your steering wheel, clutch and brake are three fourths of how you know what your car's doing.

But that wasn't not really that far "off". Sure, I mention local drivers, but I think one day you may understand the relevance of what I wrote - vague as it may seem.

The other replies are giving related examples, experiences & wisdoms.

But the beauty of your opinion that Kinect would be good in the future is that it is a opinion. And it might come true despite what we others think. (I'll vouch for that - I am usually the one with the lone opinion in the wilderness - unfortunately for the wise others I am often correct. And I have been involved with many esoteric designs & strategies at leading edge technology and non-tech innovation (which lately I have been calling devolution LOL). Hence my off topic tangents which intend to pre-warn or educate, sometimes by stirring.)

I wonder what undocumented features will be incorporate in Kinect? I hope it's based on *nix - though maybe ADA could be bug-free so that next time they send F-18's from stateside to Australia, they don't turn back at the equator LOL!

But I'll cease replying & stirring this thread. Point made else taken.

Yea but you can go to XBox.com and they pretty much lay it all out on the table. I also want to throw the look of it into the mix. All though my car is filled with so much Car PC stuff, i pride myself that it all isn't so obvious. The Kinect is a very obvious item. I also want to note that the Kinect works by calculating body movement. In our cases we will be setting it behind glass (the windshield) and I can image that will drastically alter performance.

And like I said, we are talking about a product that probably won't.

Well obviously Microsoft aims this for gaming/gamers but other applications (such as this) arent thought out yet....

Looks is another debate which I ment not to throw into the mix into this thread. I for one, do not care how it looks like while you do. Those are opinions which IMO have nothing to do with the thread itself.

I imagine that with proper software (if the idea ever takes off) we can set sensetivity to ignore the windsheild and look beyond it thus allowing the idea which is currently scan a object and give information about it (vender, model, speed, etc for another car for example)

Looks is very important, if it looks cool, it invites people to remove it from the car, lol. Like you said though that is another discussion.

Those cameras on the Kinect are very precision cameras. They both work together along with sensors if I am not mistaken. I cant imagine a software or even the hardware being able to compensate for all that. Also what happens when it rains or snows? There is a reason why auto manufacturers don't use this type of tech. There is just to much to take into account. I think your better off using sensors, which is what the other guys are using.
