N Computing Solution Project. Need your guys feed back!

I have been trying to get a PC unit to each seat. Problem is that money, powering, and other factors make the install complicated. I was browsing thru the forums and someone had linked to the N Computing U170 unit.

    http://www.ncomputing.com/Products/U...connected.aspx

I went and bought a test unit to see how this exactly works. Basically you make a user name under windows, activate some remote option and install there software. I decided to take my PC from install number 3 and bring it back to life.

    Stats:

    1) 1.9ghz Dual Core AMD Turion Processor
    2) 4gb of RAM
    3) 40GB HDD

I installed everything as they instructed. Basically it looks like the hardware is simply a USB soundcard, USB hub, and USB graphics card, all rolled into one.

I wasnt expecting much, but the system ran super fast. Its OS was actually faster then the Host PC. It played youtube fairly well, internet was good, it even played my 2D game emulators perfectly. Centrafuse even ran on it. The only thing it can not handle is 3D, which is fine. I plan to use these units only for general use.

First I needed to make sure that these units work with all the devices I need. Joysticks, KVMP, and touchscreen is the most important. Mouse and keyboard are guaranteed to work. So first I installed the joystick on the host PC and then plugged it into the N Computing. Went to the options on the U170 and saw it there. Played SEGA for about 5 minutes with no issues. I then installed my KVMP switch and tested. Worked flawlessly. Was able to switch between screens and audio.

Here is where I need your help.

I go to install the touchscreen and it works perfect on the Host PC. I then switch it and put it on the U170. I press and nothing. So I figure id wait, maybe it has to install. Well after awhile I realized it wasn't going to work. So I kept the touchscreen plugged into the U170 but switched to host PC and what do you know, its controlling the host PC instead. I had this issue with Centrafuse, when i would open it on the U170, it opened on the host instead. I figured maybe that it is sharing main Windows files and can not be shared or run multiple instances. I notice that if I put a program into the user name folder of the terminal, it can work. Can the same thing be done with drivers?

What can I do to get this to work? Any help would be awesome.

i kinda think it has base hardware/drivers and then the terminal audio/video/keyboard/mouse and being a terminal it has no mechanism to install drivers to it. there must be a way as airlines have been doing that for years. wonder how they do it, it must be windows based as almost every flight i have been on they have had to reboot it at least once SNO

And if you watched the boot screen you would see linux booting up Those are embedded devices and have nothing to do with this product.

All this product does is provide virtualization-> the nodes dont even contain a CPU just a proprietary version of RDP display (making it impossible for them to perform better then the host PC). Without knowing if usb is encoded and transmitted as part of their protocol or as part of the USB protocol its impossible to say where the problem is. Best bet is a call to their tech support...

LMFAO...... Well here is what I am noticing. As far as the touch drivers can see, there is only one display. If I go under Windows, it says I have one display. Now if I go under device manager, it says I have 6 displays. One being the display of the host computer and the rest all being Virtual displays. Maybe somehow the PC can be tricked so that all the virtual displays can come up as physical ones. Then that way the touch driver can be set to multi-display mode. That would work perfect!

It might be possible to get different drivers to work here but no theres no way to make the virtual displays appear as physical displays. It traverses video cards to populate physical displays and they need their own graphics drivers. This doesn't do any of that...the virtual devices are just network endpoints that the virtual session gets streamed to.

Their tech supports sucks dirty @$$. They couldnt even tell me if the KVMP switches would work. All they said is that ELO screens will work. I told them its for a car with smaller screens, ELO doesnt go that small.

Since I got you here, can OpenMobile run multiple instances? CF cant so if I hit CF logo on a virtual station, it will open, but it can not be open 2 times. So if I try to open on the host, while its running on virtual, then it does nothing but runs on that virtual station.

yea it can but isn't enabled in 0.7 to prevent users accidentally doing that. We could add a command line switch to enable it if theres a need.

This is going to sound like a giant I told you so...but why are you considering ncomputing? This is a poor mans way (although certainly not literally at that price) of getting multi-zone support. You save nothing by using these ncomputing devices since all of the processing still happens on the host. You would be better off getting a fairly powerful computer and a few of these:
    http://www.mo-co-so.com/product-p/mcs-usb-vid.htm

which unlike ncomputing or other virtualization techniques would allow you 3d graphics and video decoding to be offloaded to separate devices.

HMMMM, dont know why my earlier response didnt post.

Anyways, I dont know why I was thinking seperate hardware was the way to go. An extended desktop environment is better. Most touchscreen softwares are made for it. Also because I am going to use an extended technique, that means CF 3.2 will work perfectly in multizone mode. I did the math and if I use my AMD board (was going to retire it to a desktop at home) then I dont have to spend a lot of money. Infact I bought 5 USB soundcards, and 3 USB 7 port hubs for about $32.70. I am thinking of going with Aluratek USB to VGA adapters. I can pick up 5 of them for $250.00. So that gives me everything I need for $283.00. That saves me a cr@p load of money and lets me have my cake and eat it too.

So my main system will be for all the heavy 3D stuff and main rear controls for rear. Then the rear PC will be for invidual controls. I plan to retire the OPUS 320 to power the rear unit, then buy the front one a OPUS 360. As for powering all the accessory 5V devices in the car, I need to figure something out. According to my calculations I have 30 amps of 5V deivces. So I think I still may have to buy extra PSU units, but thats no biggie.

read the other thread where we discussed this for about 3 pages and you insisted a multi-screen approach would never work-you gave reasons.

I would recommend you listen to the quality of the chepo USB sound cards before you get 5 of them.....many of the chinese knockoffs are horrific (firsthand experience there unfortunately).

I would also recommend not getting the Aluratek units...spend the extra 20 bucks and get something that will offload the video processing to the card instead of bogging down the main machine (like I linked to above).

Can you post how you arrived at your 30amp number....that seems to be on the high side.

Can you link me to that thread? Thing is I have to give up my idea and loose some usability that a dedicated per seat system would offer. The cost is astronomical and its just way too complicated. Now I am also at the point where I just want to finish. My install is already so complicated, in fact im thinking of ripping it out and starting from scratch. Now that you have kind of set me on a path for the rear, I realize the path for the front system is also complicated and has room to be stream lined, as far as how I set things up.

The USB soundcards are 7.1 simulated surround sound. They actually sound pretty good. I bought one for the main system and it works nice.

What do you look for when buying USB graphics cards? I dont see any stats on the one you linked to, I dont even see a name brand. So I am going for a unit that has RAM built in?

Well I have 6 KVMP switches, each use 2.6 amps. A Ethernet switch 1.2 amps, Access Point 2.0. Three 7 port hubs, each rated at 1.5 amps. Then I threw in a bit more for just in case.
