Sounds like it could possibly be a hard drive problem.. try installing Windows or Linux on a different hard drive and see if you still have the problem.. regular computer hard drives aren't really desinged to be mobile, though some will take a beating more than others they are designed for maximum access time = higher RPM (ie. 7200RPM), the centrifical force of the platters on a 7200RPM standard desktop hard drive can make it alot easier for heads to get kicked around and possible scratch the platters thus crashing the drive out. I've seen the exact same thing from people who use their PC tower as a foot rest.
BTW this is why laptop drives are idea for the carputer environment, they are built to take the bumps involved with making a PC moble.
