    Unhappy Bump = Freeze!?

I got everything setup and now even if I hit a small bump or even hit my trunk with my hand the computer freezes. I had a computer in there for a month and it worked no problem but I need parts from that computer for my own so I took it out. Now I got another computer and it has this issue. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

Sounds like it could possibly be a hard drive problem.. try installing Windows or Linux on a different hard drive and see if you still have the problem.. regular computer hard drives aren't really desinged to be mobile, though some will take a beating more than others they are designed for maximum access time = higher RPM (ie. 7200RPM), the centrifical force of the platters on a 7200RPM standard desktop hard drive can make it alot easier for heads to get kicked around and possible scratch the platters thus crashing the drive out. I've seen the exact same thing from people who use their PC tower as a foot rest.

BTW this is why laptop drives are idea for the carputer environment, they are built to take the bumps involved with making a PC moble.

Check your power cables, connections inside the case.... sounds like a loose wire/connector

You may also want to check and make sure all PCI components and memory sticks are secure on your motherboard.

Did you check to make sure everything is seated properly and firm in each PCI and memory slot? Also make sure that you ATX or AT connector is seated tight to the board. If all else fails you may have a loose component in the PSU or possibly a part of your motherboard is grounding out by tapping to the PC chasis if it is made of metal.

If you do find that its something loose, then hotglue works wonders

Regarding the HD issue lots of people here on the forums and elsewhere have recommended mounting the HD vertically so that when you hit a severe bump the head and arm will just swing off track before continuing reading/writing instead of bouncing into the platter causing a head crash.
Also osirisdon posted this great link on optimizing Win2k/XP.

The interesting tweak was stopping the kernel from being cached on the HD, keeping it all in memory, thus minimizing HD use. Good luck tracking it down.

Im pretty sure it's not the hard drive because if I hold the HD out side of the case it still freezes if I hit the site of the case. I replaced the motherboard and CPU because my other one the heat sink and fans were so big when I hit a bump the whole cpu would come flying out. Now I have the stocked fan on a cpu. I'm not sure what the hell this could be but it sucks....
