Please help me diagnose, car pc just stopped working.

I'm so sad, everything was fine 1 second then no nothing switches on. Please help me determine the problem.

    Spec
    M10000
    M1-ATX
    Road Runner latest version
    Windows XP

Before problem - I was playing a video file in Road Runner (vlc as media player) Video was stuttering and slow, I couldn't stop the video. I then turn off ignition

Now the car pc no longer boots

    Current Symptoms
    -
    1) Mobo fan, USB hub, VGA screen all power up fine. They all connected to the M1-ATX
    2) VGA screen powers up then says NO SIGNAL
    3) PSU set to 5 seconds/45 seconds hardoff. So usually after 5 seconds the system will go into hibernation and mobo fan and VGA screen power off. After 45 seconds USB hub on 5v rail also powers off. NOW, all stays on until after 45 seconds when all mobo fan, vga screen and usb hub power off at the same time.

So what could be the problem here? driving me nuts (

    Thanks in advance

Based on what you describe, treat this as a standard computer problem (ie: not a result of the car system overall). I would take box out of car and test to see if you get any vidoe signal when the box is plugged into another monitor and powered via a standard power source (ie: plug an atx power supply directly into motherboard and see what happens). I'm guessing from there you can troubleshoot this as you would any other PC.

after you have bypassed the m1, it might be a memory, or hdd issue..

    Thanks guys for the suggestions.

I've taken the car pc home and plugged in to a PC psu and tried 2 different working monitors. Still no signal to the monitors I also changed the RAM but still no help.

When I switch on the PSU the mobo fan starts up and the lights flash on the PS2 keyboard. No sound, no display.

Please please help me with this. I've only had this in my car for a week !!

I don't know anything about a M1000 -- so some info on it would be helpful. If possible -- I would talk to whom I got it from and see about RMAing the system...

BTW: you might not have sound as there may not be a speaker.
BTW2: did you strip your system down to it's bare minimum? ie: motherboard, cpu, memory (possible videocard if not part of motherboard) and see what you get?

The M10000 had a history of bad capacitors - the little cylinder shaped things on the main board. Take a look at them and see if they are split or swelled or look discolored.

Replace the M10000 with something newer if they are. The M10000 was fine for its time, but newer Atom boards are more powerful and not too expensive.

Stuttering when it shouldnt be is sometimes related to heat. What sort of temps did this happen in?

I'm assuming it doesn't even POST so you can't see the BIOS. If this is the case it has nothing to do with software, it's a hardware issue. My guess is it could be the board but I'd put my money on the RAM, I've seen this happen before. Swap in some different RAM or take it to a computer shop for them to test it, they should do it for free.

What does RMAing mean? I plugged my speakers into the earphones socket and there was no sound at all during or way after booting.

Yes just tested motherboard with memory plugged with monitor plugged in.

All the capacitors look fine, no splits or mess. They are all shiny and clean.

I do want something better but I don't have much money now. Took me a long time to save up and lurk on ebay to buy all the parts.

I just double checked and tested just in case. Yeah, it's seated properly.

Not too sure how hot but the system was running for 15 minutes max, and I live in London which is really cold at the moment.

Yeah it doesn't POST. there no display at all, the monitor does not detect a signal. I have 2 1gb sticks in my PC which are working, tested those but the car pc still does not boot.

Thanks you guys so much for helping. I really hope to fix this as I've put in so much effort to research and read how to do this, then had to save up to buy the parts. Then only to have this working in the car for 1 week only
